Patronal Feast of the Apostle Princes

The Kirta in Chamerau – the patronal feast of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul – is a festive highlight in the church year of the municipality in the Cham district, in the heart of the Bavarian Forest. It is celebrated every year around the feast day of the apostle princes and church patrons Peter and Paul on June 29, to whom the parish church is dedicated.

The traditional centerpiece is the Kirtabaum: It is traditionally erected on the church square on the Friday evening before Kirta Sunday. Raising the Kirtabaum requires precision and is only successful through the cooperation of all local clubs. Afterwards, the Catholic Youth (KLJB) Chamerau takes care of serving visitors and holiday guests – with snacks, drinks, and convivial get-togethers.

Faith, Tradition, and Community Spirit

The parish church of St. Peter and Paul was rebuilt in the Baroque style from 1668 onwards after its destruction by Swedish troops in 1633. To this day, the Kirta combines the spiritual festive service for the patronal feast with the vibrant traditions and community spirit of the village – an authentic piece of festival culture from the Bavarian Forest.
