Opening of the 2026 Culture Summer — one night, around 50 events, free admission between the music school and the main train station
The Hammer KulturNacht has been a firm fixture in the Westphalian cultural calendar since 2007. It brings together the city's cultural institutions, associations, and independent artists once a year — on the first Friday after May 1st — for a joint evening program. In 2026, the event has two reasons to celebrate: it is the 20th edition of the KulturNacht, and it simultaneously opens the Kultursommer Hamm 2026, which is part of the grand 800th-anniversary city celebration Hamm800. The best conditions for a special program.
From 5:00 PM, all participating institutions open their doors — until around 11:00 PM. Those who participate can walk between the venues and experience a concentrated city experience in one evening: concerts, readings, exhibitions, hands-on activities, performances. A total of about 50 program items — from piano performances to dance theater productions, from studio visits to readings with live music.
The list of participating institutions reads like a “Who's Who” of the Hamm cultural scene:
This mix shows what makes the KulturNacht so special: It brings together established institutions and independent players on an equal footing. No hierarchical program, but a curated mosaic of the entire city.
The participating venues are located along the axis from the Music School – City Center – Main Train Station. Those starting at the main train station can walk through the entire evening and end up back at the station. The city also distributes free route maps, and an introductory tour usually starts at the town hall.
In 2026, Hamm celebrates its 800th-anniversary city celebration (Hamm800). Throughout the year, major events, festivals, and special programs will take place. The KulturNacht opens this series with a classic “open house” format that showcases the city's cultural diversity.
A key feature: All events are free. This is made possible by Stadtwerke Hamm, the main sponsor of the KulturNacht. This makes it one of the most accessible cultural events in the city — no intimidation, no admission fees.
Anyone who hasn't yet considered Hamm a city of culture will get to know it in its most diverse form on this evening. The mix of established institutions, the independent scene, and dedicated associations makes the KulturNacht one of the best city exploration formats in NRW. Recommendation: Plan for shoes suitable for 6-7 hours of city walking.
The 20th edition opens the 2026 Culture Summer — a central program item of the 800th-anniversary city celebration Hamm800.
The detailed program for each venue will be published starting early April 2026 at hamm.de/kulturnacht.
