20th Edition in an Anniversary Year

The Hammer KulturNacht has been a firm fixture in the Westphalian cultural calendar since 2007. It brings together the city's cultural institutions, associations, and independent artists once a year — on the first Friday after May 1st — for a joint evening program. In 2026, the event has two reasons to celebrate: it is the 20th edition of the KulturNacht, and it simultaneously opens the Kultursommer Hamm 2026, which is part of the grand 800th-anniversary city celebration Hamm800. The best conditions for a special program.

The Concept — A City Becomes a Cultural Stage

From 5:00 PM, all participating institutions open their doors — until around 11:00 PM. Those who participate can walk between the venues and experience a concentrated city experience in one evening: concerts, readings, exhibitions, hands-on activities, performances. A total of about 50 program items — from piano performances to dance theater productions, from studio visits to readings with live music.

Who's Participating?

The list of participating institutions reads like a “Who's Who” of the Hamm cultural scene:

  • Gustav-Lübcke-Museum (city museum)
  • HELIOS Theater
  • Stadthaus-Galerie
  • Zentralbibliothek (Central Library)
  • Musikschule Hamm (Hamm Music School)
  • KUBUS Jugendkulturzentrum (KUBUS Youth Culture Center)
  • Bildungswerk für Theater und Kultur (Educational Center for Theater and Culture)
  • Hammenser Kulturverein e.V. (Hamm Cultural Association)
  • FabulArt Theater
  • Treibkraft.Theater
  • Bunt & Bunter Keramikstudio (Colorful & More Ceramic Studio)
  • Atelier-Galerie Tersteegen (Studio Gallery Tersteegen)
  • Ateliers Anna Hübsch, Antje Peters, Flora (Studios of Anna Hübsch, Antje Peters, Flora)
  • Hops & Spirits (Culture + Enjoyment Combination)
  • Evangelical and Catholic Parishes with their own programs
  • UNICEF Arbeitsgruppe Hamm (UNICEF Working Group Hamm)
  • FugE e.V. (Peace Group)
  • Neonweisz e.V. (Contemporary Art)
  • Historischer Löschzug Pelkum e.V. (Pelkum Historical Fire Brigade Unit)

This mix shows what makes the KulturNacht so special: It brings together established institutions and independent players on an equal footing. No hierarchical program, but a curated mosaic of the entire city.

Spatial Axis — Music School to Main Train Station

The participating venues are located along the axis from the Music School – City Center – Main Train Station. Those starting at the main train station can walk through the entire evening and end up back at the station. The city also distributes free route maps, and an introductory tour usually starts at the town hall.

Hamm800 — The Context

In 2026, Hamm celebrates its 800th-anniversary city celebration (Hamm800). Throughout the year, major events, festivals, and special programs will take place. The KulturNacht opens this series with a classic “open house” format that showcases the city's cultural diversity.

Free Admission Everywhere

A key feature: All events are free. This is made possible by Stadtwerke Hamm, the main sponsor of the KulturNacht. This makes it one of the most accessible cultural events in the city — no intimidation, no admission fees.

Why It's Worth Visiting

Anyone who hasn't yet considered Hamm a city of culture will get to know it in its most diverse form on this evening. The mix of established institutions, the independent scene, and dedicated associations makes the KulturNacht one of the best city exploration formats in NRW. Recommendation: Plan for shoes suitable for 6-7 hours of city walking.
