53rd edition of the traditional Christmas market in Hamm city centre
In the Westphalian city of Hamm, one of the most traditional and popular Christmas markets in Westphalia opens every year — and in 2026, it's the remarkable 53rd edition. From November 23rd to December 30th, 2026, the Hamm city centre around the Pauluskirche will transform into a village of stalls with wooden huts, mulled wine stands, an ice rink, and a multi-week programme.
What makes the Hamm Christmas Market special is its unusually long duration:
The market grounds are centred around the Pauluskirche in Hamm's city centre — the city's prominent Protestant main church. The historic architecture and the church tower, adorned with fairy lights, form the central axis of the market. Wooden huts, stalls, and the Sparkasse ice rink are arranged around this core.
The market is closed on the three Quiet Days — Christmas Eve, 1st, and 2nd Christmas Day. This is not only a logistical necessity but a conscious commitment to Christian festival culture — the market respects the transition from Advent to the Christmas season.
Over five weeks of market operation makes the Hamm Christmas Market one of the longest-running Advent markets in North Rhine-Westphalia. This decision — the market continues to run after Christmas until December 30th — allows for visits before and after the holidays, making it an attractive destination for the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve when many tourists are travelling.
The independent city of Hamm, with its approximately 180,000 inhabitants, is located in Westphalia, at the transition from the eastern Ruhr area to the Münsterland. Known as a railway hub (large marshalling yard), for the Maxipark (former state garden show), the Glaselefant building, and its industrial history in Hamm-Bockum-Hövel. The city centre around the market square and the Pauluskirche is the central axis, where the Christmas market is one of the most important economic and image factors.
The organiser is IMPULS — Die Hammer Wirtschaftsagentur, the municipal economic development and city marketing agency. Besides the Christmas market, IMPULS coordinates other important city events — the Stunikenmarkt in September, the Hamm City Festival, and cultural series. The Christmas market is the largest and longest single event in the IMPULS calendar.
The 53rd edition of the Hamm Christmas Market runs for over five weeks — one of the longest Advent running times in North Rhine-Westphalia. The central cluster of stalls is arranged around the Pauluskirche. The highlight is the Sparkassen-Eiszauber ice rink with Sparkassen Cup and ice stock sport tournaments. The market will be closed on the three Quiet Days, thus respecting the transition phase from Advent to Christmas.

Christmas Eve (December 24th), 1st and 2nd Christmas Day (December 25th/26th)
The days between Christmas and New Year's Eve (December 27th-30th) are often particularly relaxed because most other Christmas markets in Westphalia have already closed. If you want to use the ice rink without long waits, come during the week and not on Friday or Saturday evening.
