One of Middle Franconia's liveliest Kerwas
Emskirchen is a market town in Middle Franconia in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim – and when the fourth weekend in August approaches, the entire town is dedicated to the Kerwa. From the Kerwa parade on Thursday, to the festival tent and amusement rides, to the grand finale fireworks: the Emskirchen Kirchweih has been a source of identity for generations.
The Highlights of the Kerwa
- Kerwa Parade: traditional festival parade on the first day of the festival, often starting at the old brewery, with a music band, local youths, the Kerwabaum (Kerwa tree), and traditional costume groups
- Children's Olympiad: a sporty and playful program for the young festival visitors
- Duck Race on the Aurach: hundreds of lovingly painted rubber ducks race down the Aurach river – the finish line is behind the Schützenhaus (shooting club house), with awards presented around 7:00 PM; organized by the local shooting club
- Festival Tent with Live Bands: traditional brass music during the day, dance bands in the evening
- Amusement Rides and Shooting Galleries around the festival grounds
- Grand Fireworks at 10:15 PM at the end of the festival, after the performance of the top band in the festival tent
More than just a folk festival
The Emskirchen Kerwa is organized by the market administration together with local associations, the shooting club, the music band, and the volunteer fire department. Young people meet for a 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint) in the beer garden, the local youths elect their representatives, and the entire town celebrates a custom for four days that is firmly anchored in the Franconian calendar.
Emskirchen — the Aurach and the Margrave Canal
Emskirchen is located in the Aurach valley between Nuremberg and Bad Windsheim, on the historic Nuremberg–Würzburg railway line. The Aurach river flows through the town and becomes the main stage for the duck race. A second, smaller Kerwa takes place in October in the district of Rennhofen.
