Traditional Jakobi-Kerwa in the Aurach-Zenn community association in Middle Franconia
The Kirchweih in Hagenbüchach joins the dense Kirchweih calendar of the Neustadt a.d. Aisch-Bad Windsheim district year after year. According to old custom, it falls on the weekend before or around St. James' Day (July 25th) and is thus in the tradition of the so-called Jakobi-Kirchweihen, which are kept alive in numerous Protestant village communities in Middle Franconia.
The focus is on the Kirchweihgesellschaft – the "Burschen und Madli" (young men and women) of the community, who, in Franconian traditional costume, erect the Kirchweih tree, lead the parade, and perform the opening dance. With Kirchweih decorations, colorful ribbons, and the distinctive hoop on their hats, they present themselves on the festival weekend in Schulstraße around the St. Lorenz Church. They are accompanied by a Franconian brass band that plays polkas, marches, and typical Ländler pieces.
The Kirchweih is still closely linked to the patronage day of the Protestant parish of Hagenbüchach today. A festive church service is celebrated on Sunday, after which the village community gathers for a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) in the festival tent. The interweaving of church, clubs, and village life is unmistakable in Franconian Kirchweih customs and makes the event particularly appealing.
Hagenbüchach belongs to the VG Hagenbüchach-Wilhelmsdorf and the Aurach-Zenn Municipal Alliance in western Middle Franconia. In this area between Neustadt a.d. Aisch and the city of Fürth, Kirchweihen follow each other closely every weekend. The Hagenbüchacher Kerwa is one of the supra-regionally known festivals in this series and also attracts guests from the neighboring communities of Wilhelmsdorf, Markt Erlbach, and Emskirchen.
In the festival tent, bratwurst from a charcoal grill, Schäuferla (pork shoulder), roast pork with dumplings, and farmer's salad are served. This is accompanied by beer from regional Middle Franconian breweries. Evening entertainment is provided by bands and DJs who play a repertoire ranging from Franconian folk music to current hits. Those who prefer a quieter atmosphere can find traditional refreshment in Hagenbüchach's surrounding inns.
The Kirchweih Hagenbüchach 2026 will take place on the weekend before St. James' Day – specifically on Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th, 2026. The Kirchweihgesellschaft will lead the traditional parade, erect the Kirchweih tree, and open the festival with the typical Franconian Kirchweih dance.
On Sunday, the festive church service will be held in the Protestant church, after which the village community will gather for a "Frühschoppen" in the beer tent. Brass bands will play throughout the weekend, and dance bands will take over in the evenings. Admission to the festival grounds is free.
