Open-Air Classical Festival by the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in Knoops Park
Knoops Park in the Lesum district is one of the most atmospheric landscape parks in the entire state of Bremen – and for three days in June, it belongs to music. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, one of Europe's most renowned chamber orchestras, has been hosting "Sommer in Lesmona" since 1995, an open-air festival that has long since achieved cult status. The name comes from Marga Berck's autobiographical novel, which tells the romantic love story between Marga and Percy in the 1920s – right here, in the extensive grounds above the Lesum river.
The special feature: there are no fixed seats. You come with a blanket, folding chair, and picnic basket, find your favorite spot on the lawn, and experience music in an atmosphere that balances exquisite classical music with a relaxed summer evening. Those who wish can rent chairs (€3 + €5 deposit) or blankets (€2 + €3 deposit) on site. For the traditional Sunday picnic competition, many guests bring opulent buffets with candelabras and floral arrangements – a spectacle in itself.
The programme includes four concert formats: the Bremen Friday Night with a guest star, the musical and literary Tea in Lesmona on Saturday afternoon, the grand Orchestra Concert on Saturday evening with the traditional sparkler ceremony, and the Family Day on Sunday with the Grand Family Concert. In 2026, guests will include British saxophonist Jess Gillam, actor Devid Striesow, and conductor Giuseppe Mengoli.
Knoops Park is located in Bremen North, easily accessible by RS1 and RS2 from Bremen Hauptbahnhof to Bremen-Lesum, then a ten-minute walk. Due to limited parking, the organizer strongly recommends travelling by public transport. Dogs, tents, grills, and large umbrellas are not allowed in the park.
The festival opens with Bremen Friday Night: Guest star Jess Gillam, one of the most exciting saxophonists of her generation, presents a genre-spanning programme with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. The programme includes Darius Milhaud's suite "Scaramouche" and works by Gershwin, Puccini, Glinka, and Tchaikovsky. Conducting: Giuseppe Mengoli. Starts at 8:30 PM, doors open at 6:30 PM.
A musical and literary journey with actor Devid Striesow and an ensemble from the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie. Atmospheric stories meet chamber music – the ideal format for a late afternoon in the park.
Highlight of Saturday evening: the grand orchestra concert with guests from Southern Italy – the band Menamenamò, known for their rousing Pizzica music. This is complemented by excerpts from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" and works by Rossini, Mendelssohn, and Beethoven – culminating in the traditional sparkler ceremony on the lawn.
Sunday is all about family. The Grand Family Concert with the Future Lab Playalong Orchestra at 11:30 AM invites children and adults to make music together.
Take the Regio-S-Bahn RS1 or RS2 to the Bremen-Lesum stop, then walk about 10 minutes to Knoops Park. Parking facilities in the immediate vicinity are very limited – public transport is strongly recommended.
Tickets are available in advance through the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and at known ticket agencies. The Bremen Friday Night costs €50 (advance booking €43), Family Concert and Tea in Lesmona are significantly cheaper.
Blankets, folding chairs, and picnic baskets are expressly welcome. Seating can be rented on site. Glass bottles and grills are not permitted.
In all weather conditions – bring a rain poncho or cap.
