Cosy Advent Market in Bremen North
The Burglesum district, with its old village centre of Lesum, has retained a distinctly rural charm — thatched-roof houses, spacious parks, and proximity to the water make the quarter appear like a picturesque village within the city. Lesum was first mentioned around the year 860 as a fief on the Weser; in 1062, King Henry IV transferred the royal court of Lesum to the Archbishop of Bremen. On the second weekend of Advent, the Lesum market square becomes the focal point of the pre-Christmas season in Bremen North: the Lesum Christmas Market attracts with glittering lights, the scent of fir trees, and an atmosphere that thrives entirely on the commitment of the many participants.
The culinary offerings leave nothing to be desired: in addition to mulled wine and bratwurst, there are regional specialities and homemade cakes. This is complemented by stalls offering arts and crafts, decorative items, jewellery, and natural cosmetics — from woodwork and glass art to knitwear. Those still looking for a Christmas present will find handmade items here, away from the main shopping streets.
St. Nicholas visits the market to hand out chocolate Santas to the children. A special highlight is the joint Advent singing in St. Martini Church. The church, first mentioned in writing as early as 1235, stands visibly on a hill in the middle of the old village centre, surrounded by the historic Lesum cemetery with gravestones from the 17th century; in 1778, the nave was demolished and rebuilt as a baroque hall. In this venerable setting, the Advent singing becomes a contemplative moment that gives the market its unmistakable character.
The Lesum Christmas Market is a true neighbourhood festival that brings the district together and attracts visitors from all over Bremen North. Even on busy market days, the square retains its village character — which is precisely what makes it such a popular destination in the state of Bremen for a cosy, unhurried Advent stroll.
On the second weekend of Advent 2026 (December 5th and 6th), the Lesum market square will once again transform into an atmospheric Christmas market. From 12 PM to 9 PM on Saturday and 11 AM to 7 PM on Sunday, mulled wine, regional specialities, cakes, and arts and crafts will beckon. St. Nicholas will visit the children, and the joint Advent singing in St. Martini Church will form a contemplative highlight.
The Lesum Christmas Market will take place on the second weekend of Advent 2026 (Saturday, December 5th, and Sunday, December 6th) on the Lesum market square in the old centre of Burglesum. The schedule follows the proven concept of this volunteer-run neighbourhood market:
