Three days of Jazz and Swing at the idyllic Lesumhafen in Bremen-Burglesum
In the far north of Bremen, where the Lesum river makes a final bend just before its mouth into the Weser, lies the Lesumhafen. Once a modest fishing and transshipment point, it is now a charming mooring spot with wooden jetties, old trees, and a view of the water. At the end of August each year, it becomes the stage for the Dixieland Days – a three-day open-air festival that attracts jazz lovers and onlookers alike.
The program traditionally features a colorful mix: Classic Dixieland and New Orleans Jazz meet Swing, Western Swing, Blues, and exotic styles like Hawaiian Hotswing. In past years, formations such as the New Orleans Syncopators, the Old Time Memory Jazzband, Front Porch Picking, the Marcia Bittencourt Quartet, and Die Jazzpolizei have graced the stage. Free admission – made possible by local sponsors – makes the festival one of the most accessible cultural events in Bremen's north.
A special highlight is Sunday: The traditional morning pint ('Frühschoppen') by the water, accompanied by acoustic jazz, is a firm favorite for many regulars during the Bremen summer. Saturday also sets its own accents, with an evening laser show set to rock classics in past years. Food stalls along the harbor, supplemented by stands from local clubs like the Technisches Hilfswerk, cater to culinary needs.
Burglesum is one of Bremen's quieter districts, far from the hustle and bustle of the city center, but with its own charm: Half-timbered houses, the old Lesum church, the harbor, and the nature trails along the river provide a fitting backdrop for a festival that consciously focuses on atmosphere rather than size.
The 2026 edition of the Dixieland Days at Lesumhafen, expected for the last weekend of August, will not take place. On its official website, organizer H&W weserevents (Lutz Hößelbarth) announced: "Unfortunately, Dixieland 2026 cannot take place this year for organizational reasons!"
Background: Hößelbarth (63) is dissolving his agency at the end of September 2025 and going into early retirement. After the 10th-anniversary edition in August 2025, the immediate continuation is thus interrupted. With Sebastian Hadler (beverage specialist), a new partner has already been found for the commercial, gastronomic, and advertising aspects; Hößelbarth himself intends to continue looking after the artistic component and the bands. The Burglesum local office also supports the continuation of the festival at its traditional location. A resumption in subsequent years is therefore the goal – however, there will be no edition in 2026.
The 2026 edition is cancelled – there will be no program or live music weekend at Lesumhafen in 2026. Current status and background information directly from the organizer at weserevents.de/dixieland.
