Medieval Christmas flair in the historic half-timbered town center
Seßlach is one of the best-preserved medieval small towns in Franconia. With its intact town wall, gate towers, half-timbered houses, and narrow street layout, the Upper Franconian town has served as a historic film set multiple times. It is precisely this authentic medieval atmosphere that makes the Seßlach Christmas Market one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Upper Franconian district of Coburg.
Lovingly decorated wooden huts line the main streets and squares of the old town. Regional exhibitors from the Seßlach town area and the entire Coburg.Rennsteig tourism region offer arts and crafts, Christmas decorations, regional specialties, and gift items. The culinary offerings range from chimney cakes in various flavors to roasted almonds, warming soups, bratwurst, homemade spirits, and hot meals in local restaurants.
The market explicitly sees itself as a family festival. Children can decorate gingerbread themselves, meet St. Nicholas and his helpers in the alleys, or experience the Seßlach puppet theater. The children's program runs from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM on both days. The highlight is the performance of the Seßlach Christkind (Christ child) with St. Nicholas and angels on stage – a radiant sight against a medieval backdrop. Fire pits spread light and warmth in the narrow alleys, and the scent of mulled wine, punch, and bratwurst makes the Christmas market a feast for the senses.
Seßlach, a town of around 4,000 inhabitants in the northwestern Coburg district in Bavaria, is one of the most beautiful small towns in Franconia. Fortified in the 14th century, the town has preserved its medieval townscape almost unchanged. The Christmas market uses this backdrop for an authentic Christmas experience – an alternative to the large Christmas markets in the metropolises.
On the first Advent weekend of 2026 – that is, Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6 (St. Nicholas Day) – the Seßlach Christmas Market opens in the medieval old town of Seßlach, a town in Upper Franconia. Against the backdrop of the impressively preserved half-timbered houses and the historic town wall, lovingly decorated stalls from regional exhibitors from the Seßlach town area and the Coburg-Rennsteig tourism region are lined up.
The children's program runs from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM on both days with the Seßlach puppet theater, gingerbread decorating, and encounters with St. Nicholas in the alleys. The highlight is the stage performance of the Seßlach Christkind with St. Nicholas and angels. Mulled wine, chimney cakes in various flavors, roasted almonds, bratwurst, warming soups, and homemade spirits characterize the culinary offerings. Fire pits cast a warm glow on the narrow alleys.
