Ecumenical Christmas Market on the 1st Advent around the Grunewald Church on Bismarckallee – Tradition since 1976
The Christmas market around the Grunewald Church has been a firm fixture in Berlin's villa district between Bismarckplatz and Hagenplatz since 1976. Unlike the large, commercially organized Berlin Christmas markets, it is a small market supported by the two church communities, specifically aimed at the neighborhood. Families from Grunewald, Wilmersdorf, and the surrounding districts come here every year on the 1st Advent – in 2026, that will be Sunday, November 29th.
The market is an ecumenical project: supported by the Evangelical Parish of Grunewald (Grunewald Church, Bismarckallee 28B) and the Catholic parish of St. Karl Borromäus, which is located in the immediate vicinity. The approximately 40 to 60 stalls are run exclusively by charitable organizations, associations, and initiatives; the proceeds go to the work of the church communities and supported projects.
Culinary delights typical of Advent: mulled wine, hot chocolate, punch, crêpes, waffles, bratwurst, homemade cakes. At the handicraft stalls, you'll find handmade sewn items, candles, small ceramics, books, jewelry, Christmas decorations – mostly designed by the dedicated members of the congregation themselves. Inside the church, there are craft activities for children. The ambiance on Bismarckallee, framed by the brick church and residential street, is deliberately quiet – "cozy and familial," as the community itself describes it.
Grunewald is part of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district and is one of Germany's wealthiest residential areas: old villas, large properties, well-kept streets, direct access to the forest of the same name. The Christmas market at the Grunewald Church is one of the few occasions during the year when this otherwise rather reserved neighborhood comes together and shows itself publicly. This is another reason why it is an important date for the neighborhood – not a tourist market, but a meeting place.
