Advent Atmosphere at Berlin's Oldest Castle
Jagdschloss Grunewald, built in 1542 for Elector Joachim II, is the oldest still-standing castle in Berlin. Its courtyard, enclosed by whitewashed Renaissance buildings, hosts a Christmas market once a year, which many Berlin families cherish as a hidden gem.
What Makes the Market Special
Living fairy tale characters stroll among the stalls – Little Red Riding Hood, Mother Hulda, Cinderella often meet visitors in surprising places. Live music (brass bands, small choirs, folk ensembles) fills the courtyard stage. The stalls primarily feature arts and crafts from Berlin and Brandenburg, along with mulled wine, stollen, roasted almonds, and regional specialties. It's not a mass market, but a curated event format.
District and Location
The hunting lodge is located at Hüttenweg 100 in the Grunewald district (Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough) on the edge of the forest of the same name. The walk from Grunewald station through the forest is part of the journey – those who arrive early can walk around the lake and stop by the castle courtyard. Berlin, State of Berlin.
Date and Tradition
The market traditionally takes place on the 2nd Advent weekend. A moderate entrance fee is charged (typically around 4 to 6 Euros), with reduced prices or free entry for children. The organizer is the SPSG (Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg).
