Biennial Summer Night of Goldbeater Art in Schwabach's City Centre – 25,000 Visitors, Free Admission
The Goldschläger Nacht is the most identity-defining city event in Schwabach – that Central Franconian town that has been world-renowned for its gold leaf production since the 16th century. Schwabach is one of the last cities in Europe where the traditional craft of goldbeating is still actively practiced – that laborious process where a gold nugget is hammered into paper-thin leaves, only 1/10,000th of a millimeter thick. This gold leaf industry has shaped the city's prosperity and name for generations.
The Goldschläger Nacht was first held in 2006 and has taken place every two years in even-numbered years since then. 2026 marks the 11th edition. The format is a biennial summer night that fills the entire city centre with live performances, street art, commerce, and gastronomy – from Schwabach's town church and Königsplatz to the City Museum at Friedrich-Ebert-Platz.
Several live music stages feature regional and national bands of all genres – from rock and pop to jazz, classical, folk music, Latino, and folk. Street theatre artists from all over Germany present stilt walking, dance, fire juggling, and acrobatics in the alleys. Goldbeater demonstrations showcase the centuries-old craft live, along with live gilding, gold leaf sales, and gilding workshops for visitors.
Schwabach's shops stay open until 11:00 PM during the Goldschläger Nacht – an exceptionally long shopping night featuring many special promotions, exclusive gold leaf sales, and pop-up installations. The Schwabach City Museum opens its doors for free, presenting its extensive collection on Schwabach's goldbeater history with interactive elements.
Schwabach is an independent city with around 41,000 inhabitants in Central Franconia (State of Bavaria), south of Nuremberg. The city officially holds the title of "Goldstadt" and boasts a well-preserved historic centre with late Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings. Schwabach's town church of St. Johannes and St. Martin, with its magnificent altar furnishings, is one of Central Franconia's most important churches. The entire city centre serves as the festive backdrop for the Goldschläger Nacht.
Since 2024, the City of Schwabach has implemented a strict reusable cup policy for all food and beverages – a pioneering example for sustainable large-scale events. Disposable tableware is prohibited; all vendors must use deposit cups.
From 6:00 PM, the numerous stages and venues in the city centre will open. Schwabach's shops will be open until 11:00 PM, and the City Museum will be accessible free of charge. Live bands, fire jugglers, and dance troupes will entertain the alleys until midnight. The event ends at 12:30 AM.
