Nostalgic Christmas Market in the former Mendelssohn Palais in Grunewald
The St.-Michaels-Heim at Bismarckallee 23 in Berlin-Grunewald was once a family estate of the famous Mendelssohns — the banking and composing family whose Berlin history dates back to the 18th century. After World War II, the property became a guesthouse with a conference center, operated by the Johannisches Sozialwerk, a non-profit association of the Johannische Kirche. The Adventsmarkt has been held here for over 40 years — today it is a fixture in Berlin's Christmas calendar.
Unlike the large tourist markets in Mitte, the St.-Michaels-Heim is a small, quiet market with a clear focus on crafts. Characteristic elements:
The market primarily attracts families from the surrounding Grunewald and Wilmersdorf neighborhoods, as well as regular customers from the Johannische community and some Berlin insiders who cherish it as a hidden gem. Tourists are rare here — which makes the market a truly local Berlin event, without crowds and with atmosphere.
Grunewald is an affluent villa district in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough, directly adjacent to the forest of the same name. Visitors to the Adventsmarkt typically combine it with a forest walk at Hundekehlesee or Grunewaldsee — a classic Berlin family Sunday during the pre-Christmas season.
The 2026 edition is set, the exact date will be officially published by the Johannisches Sozialwerk in October — traditionally, the market takes place on the first Advent weekend (likely November 28–29 or December 5–6 in 2026).
The venue remains the St.-Michaels-Heim at Bismarckallee 23, 14193 Berlin (Grunewald district, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough). Free admission, all sales proceeds go to the charitable projects of the Sozialwerk.
Free admission. Sales at the stalls — all proceeds for charitable purposes of the Johannisches Sozialwerk.
S-Bahn S7 to Grunewald (15-minute walk) or Bus M19 stops at Erdener Straße (200 meters) or Hasensprung (400 meters). By car: Bismarckallee 23, parking available on the premises and in the surrounding residential streets.
Completely free. All proceeds from sales go to the charitable projects of the Johannisches Sozialwerk.
Saturday from 2 PM to 8 PM, Sunday from 12 PM to 6 PM. The exact date for 2026 will usually be announced in October.
Very child-friendly. Mulled wine and alcoholic specialties are limited — the Sozialwerk is tolerant of alcohol, but it's not a focus. Cash recommended, card payment at some stalls.
