56th edition of the 'Green Hell of Hagen' — Half Marathon, 10 km, and Fun Run on a hilly course
Anyone who runs in Westphalia knows the Hagener Volkslauf — and its not-so-flattering, but affectionately meant nickname: 'the Green Hell of Hagen'. The run earns this moniker because of the significant elevation changes imposed by the hilly terrain of Hagen. In 2026, SC Concordia Hagen 1967 e.V. will host the 56th edition of its traditional run — with start and finish at the Marktplatz Hagen-Emst in the Emst district.
The range of distances caters to all running levels:
The routes lead from Marktplatz Emst through the surrounding hilly area — with ascents, descents, and constantly changing scenery (residential areas, forests, open fields). The Half Marathon involves well over 200 meters of elevation gain. The average finish times are accordingly slower than on flat half marathons — those who take on the Hagener Volkslauf are looking for training challenge, not personal bests.
The Hagener Volkslauf is part of the Hagener Lauf-Cup 2026, a competition involving several runs in Hagen (including together with the Lennelauf). Participants in the Cup collect points throughout the season. The organizer is SC Concordia Hagen 1967, one of the city's traditional sports clubs with a strong athletics and running department.
Hagen is located on the southern edge of the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia, transitioning into the Sauerland region. This topography — Ruhr area meets low mountain range — is precisely the source of the significant elevation changes in the Volkslauf. The Emst district, nestled in the hilly southern part of Hagen, has been the start and finish location for the Volkslauf for over five decades.
The 56th edition of the Hagener Volkslauf will take place on May 14, 2026. Four distances, two start times — and a hilly course known for its challenge in the Westphalian running calendar. The organizer, as always, is SC Concordia Hagen 1967, and the run counts towards the Hagener Lauf-Cup 2026.
Entry fees per distance are available on the SC Concordia Hagen website. Late registration on the event day is possible for an additional fee.
Hagen Hauptbahnhof (main station) is accessible by ICE/IC and RE trains from Cologne, Dortmund, and Kassel. From the main station, take bus 510 or 511 to Hagen-Emst (Marktplatz). By car, take the A45 (Sauerlandlinie, Hagen exit) or the A1 (Hagen-West exit). Parking is available in Emst.
Online registration via the SC Concordia Hagen website. Late registration on the day of the event is possible for an additional fee.
If you're running in Hagen for the first time: Study the course beforehand on the Concordia website — you should be aware of the climbs. For the Half Marathon, hill training in the weeks prior is recommended.
