About Hagener Volkslauf

On May 14, 2026, the 56th edition of the Hagener Volkslauf will start. Start and finish are at the Marktplatz Hagen-Emst, from where the routes lead through the hilly urban area of Hagen — known as 'the Green Hell of Hagen' due to the challenging elevation gain. The Half Marathon (21.1 km) and 10 km start together at 10 AM, while the 6 km Fun Run and 6 km Walk start at 1 PM. The organizer is SC Concordia Hagen 1967, and the run is part of the Hagener Lauf-Cup 2026 (together with the Lennelauf).

The 'Green Hell of Hagen' in its 56th Edition

Anyone who runs in Westphalia knows the Hagener Volkslauf — and its not-so-flattering, but affectionately meant nickname: 'the Green Hell of Hagen'. The run earns this moniker because of the significant elevation changes imposed by the hilly terrain of Hagen. In 2026, SC Concordia Hagen 1967 e.V. will host the 56th edition of its traditional run — with start and finish at the Marktplatz Hagen-Emst in the Emst district.

Four Courses in the Morning and Afternoon

The range of distances caters to all running levels:

  • Half Marathon (21.1 km) — Start 10:00 AM — the king's distance, challenging due to the elevation gain
  • 10 km Run — Start 10:00 AM — the popular middle-distance race
  • 6 km Fun Run — Start 1:00 PM — for beginners and hobby runners
  • 6 km Walk — Start 1:00 PM — for Nordic Walking and brisk walking

Course and Profile

The routes lead from Marktplatz Emst through the surrounding hilly area — with ascents, descents, and constantly changing scenery (residential areas, forests, open fields). The Half Marathon involves well over 200 meters of elevation gain. The average finish times are accordingly slower than on flat half marathons — those who take on the Hagener Volkslauf are looking for training challenge, not personal bests.

Hagener Lauf-Cup 2026 and Concordia Hagen

The Hagener Volkslauf is part of the Hagener Lauf-Cup 2026, a competition involving several runs in Hagen (including together with the Lennelauf). Participants in the Cup collect points throughout the season. The organizer is SC Concordia Hagen 1967, one of the city's traditional sports clubs with a strong athletics and running department.

Hagen — Gateway to the Sauerland

Hagen is located on the southern edge of the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia, transitioning into the Sauerland region. This topography — Ruhr area meets low mountain range — is precisely the source of the significant elevation changes in the Volkslauf. The Emst district, nestled in the hilly southern part of Hagen, has been the start and finish location for the Volkslauf for over five decades.

Hagener Volkslauf — edition 2026

56th Hagener Volkslauf at Marktplatz Hagen-Emst: Half Marathon and 10 km start at 10 AM, 6 km Fun Run and 6 km Walk at 1 PM. Hilly course through the southern Hagen urban area — the 'Green Hell of Hagen'. Part of the Hagener Lauf-Cup 2026.

The 56th edition of the Hagener Volkslauf will take place on May 14, 2026. Four distances, two start times — and a hilly course known for its challenge in the Westphalian running calendar. The organizer, as always, is SC Concordia Hagen 1967, and the run counts towards the Hagener Lauf-Cup 2026.
