Romantic Christmas Market in the Mäckingerbach Valley
On the 1st Advent weekend, November 28th to 30th, 2026, the LWL-Open Air Museum Hagen will open its gates for one of Westphalia's most traditional and beautiful Christmas markets. The setting is the valley of the Mäckingerbach, nestled between the over 60 historic buildings of the open-air museum. A stroll through this Advent world combines with a journey through the architectural history of Westphalia — an experience that is truly unique in Germany.
The LWL-Open Air Museum — Westphalian History to Touch
The LWL-Open Air Museum Hagen is one of the largest open-air museums in Germany. Spread across approximately 42 hectares in the Mäckingerbach valley, it features over 60 historic workshops and dwellings from all over Westphalia, meticulously relocated and reconstructed here. Blacksmiths, mills, bakeries, breweries, print shops, tobacco manufactories — they all tell the story of craftsmanship and daily life in pre-industrial Westphalia. During the Advent weekend, these buildings become a stage for around 200 artisans, who present their wares within the historic spaces.
What You'll Find
The range of handicrafts is exceptionally high-quality and diverse:
- Jewelry — silver, glass, natural materials
- Wooden toys and figures — traditional Erzgebirge carvings, modern designs
- Textiles — knitted hats, felted slippers, woven scarves
- Candles — beeswax, cast wax artworks
- Glass art — blown and cut glass, Christmas ornaments
- Ceramics — mugs, bowls, nativity figures
Additionally, you'll find honey, jam, sausages, and other regional food specialties from Westphalian direct marketers.
Advent Atmosphere with Saint Nicholas
The accompanying musical and performance program is among the finest in the region:
- Saint Nicholas strolls through the grounds, giving gifts to children and listening to poems
- Storytellers in the historic rooms — the atmosphere is as authentic as at no other market
- Brass choirs play Christmas carols in the squares between the houses
- Alphorn players create special sonic moments — the sound of the Alpine horns in the Westphalian valley is unforgettable
Admission and Opening Hours
The market requires paid admission — at a very fair price: €8 per person, with children under 14 admitted free. Opening hours:
- Friday, Nov 28th — 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM
- Saturday, Nov 29th — 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
- Sunday, Nov 30th — 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM
