Over 200 historic tractors in the Mäckingerbach Valley — the Lanz Bulldog Day of Sauerland on May 1st
The Tractor Meet at LWL Open Air Museum Hagen is one of the largest and most atmospheric tractor gatherings in North Rhine-Westphalia. Every year on May 1st, over 200 historic tractors from Sauerland, Ruhr area, Westphalia, and sometimes other federal states gather in the Mäckingerbach Valley. 2026: Friday, May 1st, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Integrated with the German Mill Day, the Tractor Meet is one of the two major May events at the open-air museum (alongside the traditional May Festival).
The LWL Open Air Museum Hagen, officially the “Westphalian State Museum for Crafts and Technology,” is one of Germany's most important open-air museums. Spread over 42 hectares in the Mäckingerbach Valley, it features over 60 historic workshops, mills, and craft businesses from the 17th to 20th centuries — from watermills to basket weaving shops and lathe workshops. It is operated by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL). This backdrop, operational year-round, makes the Tractor Meet unique: the tractors don't just chug across an anonymous festival ground, but through a real historic landscape with water wheels, stables, and blacksmiths in the background.
The lineup includes around 200 restored tractors:
The owners are mostly private collectors from the Sauerland and Ruhr areas, who finish their restoration projects throughout the year and proudly present them on May 1st. Expert chats, exchange of experiences, and photo sessions shape the atmosphere.
May 1st is traditionally a big day at the LWL Open Air Museum Hagen. Running concurrently with the Tractor Meet is the German Mill Day — the museum's historic mills (watermill, oil mill, sawmill) are put into operation and explained by mill guides. This combination of chugging tractors and grinding millstones makes the day a sensory journey into pre-industrial Westphalia.
Hagen, with around 190,000 inhabitants, lies on the edge of the Märkisches Sauerland, in the southeastern Ruhr area. The city is classically industrial (steel, mechanical engineering), but also serves as the gateway to the rural Sauerland. The LWL Open Air Museum, located in the Mäckingerbach Valley on the city border, is one of Hagen's biggest tourist attractions and a popular day trip destination for families from the entire Ruhr area. The Tractor Meet is the highlight of the spring calendar.
The 2026 Tractor Meet runs on May 1st from 11 AM to 5 PM. The historic backdrop of the open-air museum combines with the 200+ tractors for a unique acoustic and visual experience.
