North Rhine-Westphalia's largest clay court tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour
You follow the ATP Tour but don't fancy the long journeys to the big tournaments in Munich, Hamburg, or Halle? In Hagen's Eckesey district, a top-class Challenger tournament on clay has been held since 2025 — the Platzmann Open. A week of top-level tennis at TC Rot-Weiß Hagen, with over €120,000 in prize money, a 32-player singles draw, a 16-team doubles draw, and players who are on the cusp of reaching the main ATP level.
The Platzmann Open had its predecessor from 2021 to 2024 in Lüdenscheid. In 2025, the tournament was moved to Hagen — the infrastructural requirements of a Challenger tournament, larger stands, more courts, and better transport links were easier to implement in Hagen. TC Rot-Weiß Hagen has been the venue ever since.
The Platzmann Open is one of the few professional-level clay court-only tournaments in NRW. Clay courts demand slow, tactical play with high physical intensity — quite different from fast grass-court or hard-court tennis. The players who aim for victory here are often clay court specialists — South Americans, Spaniards, Italians, and Germans specializing in the continental clay season.
The tournament week comprises seven days:
With €120,950 in total prize money and 80 ATP points for the winner, the Platzmann Open is positioned in the upper half of the Challenger Tour category. For aspiring players, a victory here is a significant step towards the Top 100 of the world rankings. The previous year's winner in 2025 was German player Yannick Hanfmann, who won the final against Guy den Ouden.
Hagen is an independent city in the eastern Ruhr area, Arnsberg district, North Rhine-Westphalia, with around 188,000 inhabitants. The city lies at the transition to the Sauerland region, at the confluence of the Volme and Lenne rivers. Hagen is excellently connected by the A1, A45, and A46 motorways, as well as Hagen's main train station with ICE stops. TC Rot-Weiß Hagen is located in the Eckesey district, easily accessible.
The 2026 Platzmann Open is the second edition of the tournament at the Hagen location (after its initial relocation from Lüdenscheid in 2025). Seven days of professional tennis at TC Rot-Weiß Hagen — qualification, main draw, semifinals, doubles and singles finals. Players from the international clay court circuit compete to secure ranking points and prize money.
Day tickets from approx. €12, weekly passes available. The semifinals (Aug 7th) and singles final (Aug 9th) are, as experience shows, the most attended match days and should be booked well in advance. Tickets are available via the official tournament website and at the box office.
