Two open-air comedy performances at the International Mill Museum Gifhorn
Open-air theatre has a long tradition in Germany. Castles, monastery courtyards, and historic town squares have served as stages for open-air performances for decades. With the Gifhorn Mill Museum, another unusual venue joins the ranks: the combination of the 16 mills, the Russian Orthodox wooden church, and the village square creates a backdrop that is unique in its kind.
The two comedy performances will take place on August 5th (Wednesday) and August 30th (Sunday), 2026. The choice of different weekdays is intended to allow as many visitors as possible to attend – a Wednesday evening for local professionals, a Sunday for those from further afield.
Comedies are particularly well-suited to the open atmosphere of the Mill Museum. Humorous plots, clear dialogue, and easily visible staging all work better on an open-air stage than demanding tragedies. The choice of genre reflects the relaxed summer mood that visitors seek here.
The exact plays and participating theatre ensembles will be announced by the museum before the dates. Professional independent ensembles from Lower Saxony or touring theatre groups that regularly perform in the region are expected.
The performances will take place outdoors, weather permitting. A postponement in case of rain depends on the event concept. Picnic blankets, lightweight folding chairs, and warm clothing for the evening are recommended.
The comedy evenings are part of the Mill Museum's 2026 event calendar, which includes a dense sequence of high-quality offerings from the season opening in March, through Easter, Pentecost, the Beer Festival, comedy evenings, the Classic Car Mile, to the BRAWO Mill Lights in the following year. This positions the museum as Gifhorn's cultural centre.
The choice of a Wednesday and Sunday date appeals to different target groups: local professionals on Wednesday, families and visitors from further afield on Sunday. Both performances benefit from the atmospheric setting of the museum village.
Anyone who appreciates open-air theatre will find one of Lower Saxony's most unusual venues at the Mill Museum.
