Largest Volksfest in the Trier region with around 100,000 visitors and several stages in the UNESCO Old Town
Since the 1980s, the Trier Old Town Festival has developed into the undisputed highlight of the city's event calendar. Organized by the City of Trier in cooperation with Trier Tourismus und Marketing GmbH and numerous local clubs, initiatives, and restaurateurs, it shapes the last weekend of June and makes the city center pulse for three days.
The concept is decentralized: stages are spread across the most prominent squares of the Old Town — Porta Nigra, Hauptmarkt, Domfreihof, Kornmarkt, and Viehmarkt. Each stage has its own musical focus, from rock and cover bands to Schlager and brass to jazz, Latin, and DJ sets. This creates a strolling festival where guests can switch locations according to their taste. In between, there are wine stands from Trier and Mosel vintners, beer stands, food stalls, and regional specialties.
Characteristic is the mix of urban population, students, families from the Trier surrounding area, and numerous guests from Luxembourg, Belgium, and Lorraine, making the festival a cross-border meeting point. The UNESCO World Heritage backdrop with Porta Nigra, the Cathedral, and the Basilica of Constantine lends the event a uniqueness that clearly distinguishes it from comparable city festivals in other German medium-sized towns.
Free admission. Free special public transport services and an expanded park-and-ride offer are standard. During the festival, extended pedestrian zones and temporary road closures apply in the Old Town.
The 2026 edition is part of the city's World Heritage anniversary program. An even denser stage program than in previous years is expected, with a clear emphasis on regional music production and increased involvement of Mosel vintners. Extended performance times and special thematic sets related to the World Heritage are expected, particularly at Domfreihof and Hauptmarkt.
On Sunday, June 28, 2026, the 40th International Trier City Run will start concurrently with a half marathon, a 10-kilometer run, and a fun run. Visitors to the Old Town Festival will thus experience a double density of events in the city center.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring and summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Admission: Free on all stages and squares.
Opening Hours: Friday from late afternoon, Saturday and Sunday from noon until late at night. Stage end times are subject to noise regulations.
Getting There: By train (Trier Hauptbahnhof, 10 minutes walk). Due to road closures and crowds, public transport or park-and-ride from the exhibition grounds is strongly recommended.
Family Offers: Activity stages with children's programs during the day at designated locations.
Security: Permanent police presence, first aid stations at Hauptmarkt and Viehmarkt.
