Traditional Friesenheimer Eulenkerwe on Otto-Buckel-Platz with Pauluskirche service and torchlight procession to conclude
Friesenheim is one of Ludwigshafen's central districts, located in the western part of the city between the city center and Gartenstadt. With over 25,000 inhabitants, its own distinct district core, the prominent Pauluskirche, and active club life, Friesenheim has its own character. Otto-Buckel-Platz is the central district square and festival grounds.
The Friesenheimer Kerwe is traditionally called “Eulenkerwe” – a name whose exact origin is debated but is deeply rooted in the district's consciousness. The owl is now one of the district's symbols and appears in club logos, Kerwe posters, and catering branding.
The Kerwe officially opens on Saturday around 3 PM. The close connection to the Pauluskirche is noteworthy: the opening is preceded by an ecumenical service, in which the Protestant and Catholic congregations participate together. Only then does the actual festival begin.
Over four days – from Wednesday to Saturday (perceived as ending Tuesday) – the program runs. Bratwurst, Dampfnudeln, crêpes, cocktails, dodgems, a Ferris wheel, a children's carousel, and smaller stalls form the classic Kerwe mix. Clubs provide catering, showmen set up their rides, and a stage offers live music.
The symbolic conclusion of the Eulenkerwe is the traditional torchlight procession around the Pauluskirche's bell tower. With torches in hand, Kerwe attendees walk around the tower on the final evening – an atmospheric closing ritual that bids farewell to the Kerwe and recalls the festive core of the original Kirchweih (church consecration festival).
The festival grounds on Otto-Buckel-Platz become the Kerwe backdrop with food stalls, bars, rides, and a stage. The Pauluskirche forms the symbolic and spatial center of the Kerwe.
The complete 2026 program will be published in good time by the district association and Lukom. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
