About Schutzfrau Münnerstadt

"The Protectress of Münnerstadt" is one of the oldest and most traditional open-air plays in Franconia — performed continuously since 1927, recognized as intangible cultural heritage of Bavaria. More than 200 actors in historical costumes tell the true story of the miraculous salvation of Münnerstadt during the Thirty Years' War: citizens, soldiers, farmers, musicians, and city dignitaries march in a festive procession through the medieval old town, followed by the actual play on the Anger meadow in front of the Heimatspielhaus. In 2026, the play will be performed on three consecutive Sundays — August 30, September 6, and September 13.

Since 1927 in Münnerstadt — one of the oldest open-air plays in Franconia

Münnerstadt, the old pilgrimage and monastery town in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen, has been nurturing an extraordinary community theatre since 1927. At its heart is a historical folk play about the salvation of the town during the Thirty Years' War — driven by around 200 volunteer actors from the community and passed down through generations. The event is now listed as "Amateur Open-Air Play 'The Protectress of Münnerstadt'" on the register of Bavaria's Intangible Cultural Heritage — an honour awarded to only a few folk plays in Bavaria.

The Plot: Salvation in the Thirty Years' War

The play recounts the miracle of Münnerstadt during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648): a Swedish troop stands before the town, plundering the region — and Münnerstadt escapes devastation through the intervention of its heavenly protectress. The production combines historical local colour with religious promise; at its centre are the town's characters: the mayor, town musicians, soldiers, farmers, camp followers — and, of course, the titular "Protectress".

Procession on Sunday at 1:45 PM — Play at 2:30 PM

The performance Sunday begins with a procession of participants: at 1:45 PM, the procession of soldiers, citizens, farmers, musicians, and camp followers, all in historical costumes, forms up and marches through the medieval old town to the Anger meadow in front of the Heimatspielhaus. From 2:30 PM, the actual open-air play begins there — a performance lasting about two hours, with horse appearances, music, and mass scenes.

The Anger as the Venue

The play takes place on the Anger meadow in front of the Heimatspielhaus — a traditional open-air venue on the edge of the old town. The grandstand is covered; the play itself is performed in the open air. In case of rain, an alternative arrangement is in place. The architecture of the old town — town walls, Henneberg Museum, towers — forms part of the scenery.

Night Watchman City Tour as Accompanying Offer

As part of the community play, night tours with the "Mürschter Nachtwächter" (Münnerstadt's historical town night watchman) are also offered — an addition to the historical experience that many visitors combine with the performance day.

Schutzfrau Münnerstadt — edition 2026

The 2026 performance season of "The Protectress of Münnerstadt" will take place on three consecutive Sundays: August 30, September 6, and September 13, 2026. Each performance day begins at 1:45 PM with a procession of over 200 costumed participants through the old town. The historical folk play about the salvation of Münnerstadt during the Thirty Years' War will be performed from 2:30 PM on the Anger meadow in front of the Heimatspielhaus. This is one of Franconia's most traditional performances — uninterrupted since 1927.

The 2026 edition is confirmed via the website of the Bavarian State Ministry for Finance and Heimat (Bavaria's Intangible Cultural Heritage, ike.bayern.de), the official event calendar of the City of Münnerstadt, and the website heimatspiel-muennerstadt.de for the performance dates of August 30, September 6, and September 13, 2026.
