International Street Theatre Festival in Trier's Old Town in September 2026
The Fringe Street Theatre Festival Trier was initiated by the Theater Trier to showcase the cultural diversity of the SaarLorLux-Trier-Wallonia Greater Region and to open up Trier's old town as an open stage for street art. Since its early editions, the festival has become a permanent fixture in Trier's late summer calendar.
The focus is on the two central squares of the old town: the Kornmarkt with its fountain and cafés, and the Domfreihof in front of the UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral. These and other venues in the surrounding alleys transform into stages for street theatre, acrobatics, contemporary dance, mime, walking acts, and live music for a long weekend.
Artists from Germany, Wallonia, Lorraine, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland are invited. This gives the festival a clear cross-border focus and highlights Trier's location at the heart of the European Greater Region. Many companies present productions that oscillate between classic street art and contemporary dance or physical theatre.
Admission is free – as is tradition in street theatre. Visitors show their appreciation by contributing to the artists' hats. The festival is a family-friendly event that appeals to audiences of all ages and fills the city centre with energy, colour, and music for a long weekend.
The 2026 edition continues the established format: cross-border programming, family-friendliness, free admission, and performances in the central squares of the old town. The final artist lineup will be published on the Theater Trier website a few weeks before the festival.
Typically, several performances per day are planned at various venues, allowing the audience to stroll from stage to stage. Announcements will be made via festival flyers and the theatre's social media.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by Theater Trier in late summer. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Admission to the festival is free. Traditionally, a hat is passed around for the artists during performances – tips are welcome.
