187 Years of Marksmen Tradition
The Wusterhausen Marksmen's Guild was founded in 1839 — a year that stands for the consolidation of the civil marksmen's movement in Prussia. Today, almost two centuries later, the guild with its around 100 members is an important supporter of urban club life in Wusterhausen/Dosse, a small town with 4,500 inhabitants in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district.
The Schützenfest — Tradition in September
Three days of festival program at the beginning of September on the shooting range. Classic components: marksmen's march, king's shooting, club shooting, parade through the town, festival service on Sunday. Alongside the usual folk festival attractions: stage with brass band music (often the guild's own band or music corps from Ostprignitz-Ruppin), beer stands, bratwurst and delicacies, carousels.
Schützenkönig — The Crown of the Season
The most important sporting event of the festival is the king's shooting on Saturday: whoever shoots off the last piece of a wooden bird (or a king's target) becomes the new marksmen's king for one year. This tradition from the 14th century is kept alive in Wusterhausen, as in many marksmen's clubs.
Wusterhausen — Small Town with Tradition
Wusterhausen/Dosse, located on the Dosse (a small river that flows into the Havel), is a typical Brandenburg small town with a well-preserved historic town center. The former cloth-making town has retained its club culture — besides the marksmen's guild, the fire department, sports club, and local history society are important social anchors.
