Royal Shoot of the Marksmen's Guild of 1860
Schwesing is located in the Nordfriesland district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, east of Husum on the Schwesinger Au. The small community with around 800 inhabitants is home to one of the oldest marksmen's guilds in North Frisia: the Schwesing Marksmen's Guild of 1860 will look back on 166 years of tradition in 2026.
The Schützenfest is one of the central folk tradition festivals in northern Germany. The focus is on the Königsschießen (royal shoot): Guild members compete with air rifles or small-caliber rifles for the title of King or Queen. Whoever hits best is crowned the Schützenkönig (King) or Schützenkönigin (Queen) – an honour that in many communities is associated with special privileges and a one-year duty to represent the guild.
Unlike the large Schützenfeste in Hanover (the world's largest) or Oldenburg, the Schwesing Schützenfest is a classic village folk festival: organised by volunteers, with no admission fee, a family atmosphere, and strong participation from the village community. Visitors from Husum or Niebüll will experience a piece of North Frisian tradition here that doesn't appear in tourist guides – and is all the more authentic for it.
On June 6, 2026, the Schwesing Marksmen's Guild of 1860 will host its annual Schützenfest on the community's sports grounds. The event is listed in the official cultural calendar of the municipality (schwesing.de/de/kulturelles/veranstaltungen) and is one of the most traditional festivals in the North Frisian event calendar.
The detailed schedule — start times for the royal shoot, parade, evening programme — will be announced shortly before the date via notices in the village and the community website. Registration for competitions is managed by the Marksmen's Guild itself.
Schwesing is located in the Nordfriesland district, east of Husum. By car: B5 from Husum, then towards Mildstedt/Schwesing. By train: Husum station (direct connections Hamburg–Westerland), from there continue by bus or taxi (approx. 8 km).
Admission is typically free. Food, drinks, and the evening dance are subject to a charge. Details will be announced before the date via the community website schwesing.de or notices in the village.
