About Schützenfest Schwesing

The Schützenfest in Schwesing is the annual main event of the Schwesing Marksmen's Guild, founded in 1860 – one of the oldest marksmen's guilds in the Nordfriesland district. The traditional royal shoot takes place on the community's sports grounds, followed by festivities with music, dancing, food, and drinks. The tradition thrives on the commitment of its members and the community's participation in celebrating along the Schwesinger Au.

A Marksmen's Guild Since 1860

Schwesing is located in the Nordfriesland district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, east of Husum on the Schwesinger Au. The small community with around 800 inhabitants is home to one of the oldest marksmen's guilds in North Frisia: the Schwesing Marksmen's Guild of 1860 will look back on 166 years of tradition in 2026.

Schützenfest — What Is It?

The Schützenfest is one of the central folk tradition festivals in northern Germany. The focus is on the Königsschießen (royal shoot): Guild members compete with air rifles or small-caliber rifles for the title of King or Queen. Whoever hits best is crowned the Schützenkönig (King) or Schützenkönigin (Queen) – an honour that in many communities is associated with special privileges and a one-year duty to represent the guild.

What You Can Experience

  • Royal Shoot by the guild members
  • Crowning of the King or Queen
  • Festivities with music, dancing, and a marquee atmosphere
  • Food and Drinks organised by the guild
  • Competitions for youth often included in the programme

More Than Tradition — A Community Festival

Unlike the large Schützenfeste in Hanover (the world's largest) or Oldenburg, the Schwesing Schützenfest is a classic village folk festival: organised by volunteers, with no admission fee, a family atmosphere, and strong participation from the village community. Visitors from Husum or Niebüll will experience a piece of North Frisian tradition here that doesn't appear in tourist guides – and is all the more authentic for it.
