Tip
Warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Standing room only in front of the fire, no seating.
A Small Community, A Big Tradition
Schwesing is a small community in the district of Nordfriesland with a few hundred inhabitants — yet it cultivates the Biikebrennen with the same dedication as the larger district towns. On the evening of February 21st, the eve of St. Peter's Day, the parking lot in front of the fire station transforms into a small festival ground where the North Frisian tradition comes alive.
A Bilingual Speech
A special feature of the Schwesing Biikebrennen is the Biike speech in High German and Frisian: Mayor Wolfgang gives the traditional address, which is simultaneously translated into North Frisian by Renke Tüffers. This makes the Biikebrennen not only a winter fire ceremony but also language preservation — Frisian is one of Europe's endangered minority languages, and Schwesing actively preserves it in public spaces.
Schedule
- Sunset — Gathering at the fire station, lighting of the Biike fire
- Hot drinks served by the Schwesing volunteer fire brigade
- Biike speech by Mayor Wolfgang, Frisian translation by Renke Tüffers
- 7:30 PM — Kale buffet at Massimo's restaurant (registration required)
In the District of Nordfriesland
Schwesing is located in the district of Nordfriesland, about 7 km east of Husum. The Biikebrennen is one of the central identity-forming events for the community — alongside events organized by the volunteer fire brigade and smaller club festivals, it is the main event in the annual calendar and an attraction for visitors from surrounding communities as well.
