Annual registration and evaluation of Holsteiner mares from the Körbezirke Nordfriesland and Schleswig-Flensburg
The Holsteiner Verband e.V. is one of the most renowned horse breeding associations in Europe, representing over 800 years of tradition in Holsteiner horse breeding. In the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the association is part of the DNA of rural culture. The annual Mare Registration is one of the central dates in the breeding calendar — only registered mares are officially allowed to have their foals registered as Holsteiner.
The Behrendorf riding hall in the Nordfriesland district serves as the venue for the combined registration of the Körbezirke Nordfriesland and Schleswig-Flensburg. Starting at 2:00 PM, the mares will be presented in two groups:
Each mare will be evaluated by an expert commission — conformation, movement, and health are included in the assessment. Registration is a prerequisite for breeding use within the Holsteiner Verband.
Even those not involved in the breeding scene can attend — the mare registration is open to the public and offers insights into regional horse breeding culture. Afterwards, there is an opportunity for exchange with breeders, trainers, and horse owners from all over Nordfriesland and the Schleswig-Flensburg region.
The 2026 registration follows the established procedure of previous years: starting at 2:00 PM, mares from the Körbezirke Nordfriesland and Schleswig-Flensburg will be presented to a commission of the Holsteiner Verband in two age groups. The evaluation includes conformation, movement, and suitability for breeding.
The venue is the Behrendorf riding hall. Admission is free and is aimed equally at breeders, riders, and those interested in horses from the region.
The detailed schedule and mare registrations will be published by the Holsteiner Verband in the weeks leading up to the registration.
Behrendorf is located in the Nordfriesland district between Husum and Bredstedt. By car: A23/B5 to Bredstedt, then to Behrendorf. By train: Husum or Bredstedt as connection points; continue by car.
Admission to the mare registration is free.
The exact number of registered mares varies by year. Horse fans should bring sturdy footwear and possibly binoculars to observe the mares' movements in the hall.
