Holsteiner Breeding in the Heart of North Frisia

The Holsteiner Verband, headquartered in Elmshorn, is one of the oldest and most renowned sport horse breeding associations worldwide — Holsteiner horses are considered top horses for show jumping, dressage, and eventing. Numerous breeders are organized in the North Frisia breeding district, presenting their foals for awards each year. The Behrendorf riding hall has been the central venue for the breeding district's foal championship for years.

Day's Schedule in Behrendorf

On July 16, 2026, the awarding tour proceeds in two stages: in the morning from 9:30 a.m., foals are evaluated at the Sollwittfeld location, and from 11:00 a.m., the event moves to Behrendorf in the riding hall. Here, the colt foals will appear first, followed by the filly foals from 1:00 p.m. Afterwards, the judges will determine the winners of the breeding district championship in the NOSPA Foal Championship. Previous editions saw winners sired by Dinken, Clarimo, and Casall.

What is Evaluated

The panel of experts evaluates the foals based on type, conformation, gaits (walk, trot, canter), and overall impression. The evaluations are important references for breeders — champion foals fetch significantly higher prices at later auctions. The audience gets a rare glimpse into the region's top breeding.

Sponsor NOSPA and the North Frisia Breeding District

The championship has been supported by NOSPA (Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse) as the main sponsor for years — hence the name. The North Frisia breeding district encompasses breeders in the entire northernmost district of Schleswig-Holstein, between Husum, Niebüll, Sylt, and Flensburg. The Behrendorf riding hall is located approximately between Husum and Niebüll, easily accessible for breeders from the entire breeding district.
