Three months of urban greenery and "Wanderwald" in downtown Oldenburg with the motto "Tree Whispers"
The Oldenburg City Gardens are among the most visible climate adaptation and quality of stay projects in the city center. Over three summer months, six city gardens and a mobile "Stadtwald" (city forest) of around 150 tree planters will be spread across central squares and streets — with the aim of cooling urban heat islands, increasing the quality of stay, and promoting encounters in public spaces.
The official season kickoff will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, starting at 12 p.m. on Waffenplatz — the starting location of the "Stadtwald". The motto "Baumgeflüster" (Tree Whispers) puts the trees themselves in the spotlight, highlighting their climate function and their cultural significance in the city.
Approximately 150 mobile tree planters with oaks, birches, maples, and willows form the "Wanderwald" (wandering forest). They will be set up on Waffenplatz at the beginning of the season and will then wander through the city center starting May 30, 2026 — to various locations depending on the programming.
In parallel with the Wanderwald, six city gardens will be established at fixed locations. They combine plants, seating, water features, and meeting opportunities to create small urban oases. The chosen locations depend on the respective program plan; generally, central downtown areas are part of the concept.
The City Gardens are part of the municipal Masterplan Stadtgrün (Urban Greenery Masterplan), which strategically combines climate adaptation, biodiversity, and quality of stay. They serve as a pilot format and a concrete summer experience.
The City Garden format runs for three months. The season ends on August 9, 2026; trees and furnishings will be stored or used elsewhere.
The 2026 edition expands the City Garden concept with the Wanderwald. A detailed wandering plan and the locations of the 6 city gardens will be published in advance.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer. The structure follows the established key points:
Waffenplatz (kick-off) and other downtown areas.
