Traditional Kirchweih and Party Weekend of the Northern Upper Palatinate
The Flosser Kirwa in the state of Bavaria, in the market town of Floß, Neustadt an der Waldnaab district, boasts an exceptionally long history: the tradition of Kirchweih has been documented here since 1421. This makes the Flosser Kirwa one of the most traditional festivals in the Northern Upper Palatinate.
A characteristic feature of the Flosser Kirwa is the combination of tradition and party in two different locations. On the historic market square – laid out as a parade ground after the great fire of 1813 – the contemplative, custom-oriented Kirchweih takes place. Simultaneously, on the festival grounds in the Oberndorf district, the party-oriented festival tent becomes the center for a young, celebratory audience.
The traditional highlight is Kirchweih Sunday: it begins with church services in the morning (Protestant at 9 a.m., Catholic at 10 a.m.). Afterwards, the market band gives a concert on the market square, the mayor taps a beer keg donated by the Cylinder Club, and the historic Flosser Landwehr performs with salute shots. A children's carousel and numerous market stalls complete the picture – conviviality and entertainment are the focus.
The party weekend kicks off on Friday on the festival grounds in Oberndorf. Live bands and DJs create the atmosphere in the large festival tent, making the Flosser Kirwa known far beyond Floß as the "Party Center of the Northern Upper Palatinate." Traditionally, it concludes with a Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Monday.
The Flosser Kirwa is a vibrant expression of Upper Palatinate festival culture. The combination of centuries-old customs, village community, and exuberant celebration makes the festival a source of identity for the entire region around Floß and Neustadt an der Waldnaab.
