Remembering a Site of Nazi Terror
The Flossenbürg Concentration Camp was established in 1938 in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district in the Upper Palatinate and operated until April 1945. Today's Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial on Gedächtnisallee 5 commemorates the more than 30,000 people who died in Flossenbürg and its over 90 subcamps. The annual commemoration of the anniversary of the liberation has been the most important date in the memorial's calendar for decades.
Program and Format
- Multi-day Format: The event spans several days, bringing together film screenings, exhibitions, conversations with survivors, prayers from various religious communities, and a solemn commemorative ceremony.
- Tent of Encounters: The central format in recent years has been the "Tent of Encounters," which serves as an open space for exchange for survivors, second and third-generation relatives, and interested individuals from Friday onwards.
- Solemn Commemorative Ceremony: The highlight is the solemn commemorative ceremony, traditionally held on Sunday afternoon in the courtyard of the memorial. High-ranking political representatives, representatives of former inmate associations, and survivors speak.
- International Participation: Survivors and relatives from all over the world participate; in recent years, representatives from Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Israel, and the USA, among others, were present.
State and Responsibility
