Living History: Knights of the Templar Order and Teutonic Order in the History Park
At "Knights Hospitaller at the Bärnau-Tachov History Park", Central Europe's largest archaeological open-air park transforms into a castle of the orders. Knights of the Templar Order and the Teutonic Order present the strictly regulated life of medieval order knights – as hands-on Living History. The History Park is located in Bärnau in the Tirschenreuth district of the Oberpfalz, directly on the border with the Czech Republic (Tachov).
The focus is on the contradiction of the warrior monks: men who vowed poverty, chastity, and obedience, yet were among the most formidable military units of the Middle Ages. The reenactors follow a medieval daily routine with canonical hours – Prime, Chapter, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline – as well as silent meals accompanied by readings.
On Saturday and Sunday, the knights of the orders process into Bärnau's St. Elisabeth's Church at 10 a.m. for a service. There will be weapons training and demonstrations of the combat techniques of Templar and Teutonic Knights, as well as open themed tours at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Visitors can ask the costumed reenactors questions about daily life, food, and equipment.
The Bärnau-Tachov History Park reconstructs settlements from the Slavic era to the High Middle Ages and is a living open-air museum in the Bavarian Oberpfälzer Wald. The event is one of the Living History highlights of the park's year.
The 2026 edition of "Knights Hospitaller at the Bärnau-Tachov History Park" (April 24–26, daily 10 a.m.–6 p.m.) transforms the wooden motte-and-bailey castle into a castle of the orders.
Knights of the Templar Order and the Teutonic Order demonstrate the strictly regulated life between monastic discipline and martial craft. Visitors will experience canonical hours, silent meals with readings, processions to St. Elisabeth's Church, and weapons training.
The Bärnau-Tachov History Park is located on Naabtalstraße in Bärnau, accessible via the B22 in the Tirschenreuth district, near the Czech border.
Regular park admission prices apply. Tickets and further information are available through the ticketing system on geschichtspark.de.
