Every two years, the button town transforms into a medieval market with knights, jesters, and a grand procession
Bärnau, the "button town" in the Oberpfälzer Wald right on the border with the Czech Republic, is home to one of the region's most vibrant medieval festivals. The Historical Market Spectacle takes place every two years, transforming the old town into a medieval market for an entire weekend. The festival is supported by the town of Bärnau under festival director Stefan Gebhardt and a multitude of local clubs, who depict historical life with costumed participants and reenactment groups.
The centerpiece is the large knight's camp at the Bärnau-Tachov History Park with numerous tents and campsites, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the spirit of bygone days. The highlight of every Spectaculum is the grand historical procession through the old town, in which all knight groups, costumed participants, jesters, and music groups take part. A fire show on Saturday evening in the market square marks the end of the first day of the festival.
Historical craft techniques can be observed at the market stalls. Entertainment is provided by music and minstrel groups from Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic — in previous editions, for example, "The KingsPipers" from Berlin — as well as acrobats, combat troops, and characters like "Gaukler Sepp" (Jester Sepp). The culinary offerings are equally medieval: kettle meat, game goulash, bratwurst, and gyros, accompanied by mead, beer, and wine.
Over many editions, the Market Spectacle has become a firm fixture in the Oberpfalz festival calendar. It takes place every two years — editions were held in 2022 and 2024, and 2026 will be a Spectaculum year again. Around €30,000 is needed for its execution; a financing concept involving the participating clubs secures the future of the festival.
The Historical Market Spectacle 2026 will take place on June 20 and 21 in the old town of Bärnau — as an all-day event on both days. The festival returns every two years after 2024; the town of Bärnau and festival director Stefan Gebhardt are developing a sustainable financing concept together with the participating clubs. Several thousand visitors are expected again, along with a large knight's camp at the Bärnau-Tachov History Park and the traditional historical procession through the old town. The detailed program with times will be announced by the town of Bärnau in due course.
Note: The specific artist and time program for 2026 will be published by the town of Bärnau in advance.
Bärnau is located in the Tirschenreuth district in the Oberpfälzer Wald, directly on the B 22 federal road near the Czech border. Arrive by car via the B 22; the Bärnau-Tachov History Park with the knight's camp is located at Naaber Straße 5b. The festival grounds are the historic old town.
The festival takes place every two years on a weekend in June (Saturday and Sunday, all day). The exact admission prices will be announced by the town of Bärnau in advance.
A visit can be easily combined with the neighboring Bärnau-Tachov History Park, Bavaria's largest open-air archaeological museum for the Early and High Middle Ages.
