Kandel – Southern Palatinate Administrative Seat

With around 9,000 inhabitants, Kandel is one of the larger towns in the southern Palatinate and the seat of the Verbandsgemeinde Kandel. The historic old town with its market square, town hall, and medieval core provides the setting for the Christkindelmarkt. Kandel is well-connected by transport and attracts visitors from the entire Southern Palatinate region and the neighboring Karlsruhe area.

Town Center as Festive Backdrop

The market extends throughout the town center, with stalls in the market square, in the surrounding alleys, and in front of the town hall. The compact layout allows for a relaxed stroll, and Christmas lights and music create the atmosphere. Cafés and restaurants in the town center complement the offerings of the market stalls.

Arts and Crafts and Palatinate Delights

The market stalls offer arts and crafts – ceramics, woodwork, textiles, jewelry, glass art – as well as Palatinate specialties such as mulled wine from local vintners, punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, crepes, candied almonds, and sweet Christmas pastries. Local associations and commercial exhibitors take turns at the stands.

Several Advent Weekends

The market takes place over several Advent weekends. The opening hours – Friday 5 PM to 9 PM, Saturday and Sunday 12 PM to 9 PM – are designed to allow working visitors to come after work. These extended opening hours distinguish the Kandel market from smaller village Advent markets in the region.
