Two-day Schützenfest of the SV Schulenberg-Horstedt in North Frisia
Schützenfeste (shooting festivals) are a vibrant part of village life in North Frisia — as in almost all of Schleswig-Holstein. Unlike the more regimentally influenced Schützenfeste in the Rhineland, the North Frisian festivals are usually more family-oriented: The entire club and the royal family march through the village, stop at the homes of the reigning monarchs, are treated to refreshments, and move on — a tradition from the 19th century that makes the village visible as a community.
The Schützenverein Schulenberg-Horstedt e.V. unites two neighboring villages (Schulenberg and Horstedt) in one club. The shooting takes place at the club's shooting range, and the festival tent is usually located in a central spot in the village. Schützenfest, king's shooting, and award ceremony are the highlights of the club's year.
The typical schedule follows a fixed ritual:
Horstedt is a small municipality with around 1,000 inhabitants west of Husum, in the Husumer Marsch (Husum Marsh) and at the transition to the Schleswigsche Geest, in the Nordfriesland district. The municipality is located directly on the B5 and is characterized by agriculture — horses, livestock, marsh, and geest soils. Club life (fire department, shooting club, ring riders, rural women, sports) shapes the festival calendar.
The 2026 festival weekend followed the proven club ritual: collection of the reigning monarchs from their residences, march to the festival tent, king's shooting at the shooting range, festival evening with dancing, and on the second day, the festive crowning of the new monarchs.
One week after the festival weekend, on May 22, 2026, at 7:00 PM, the official award ceremony took place — awarding of the best shooters of the club year with trophies, certificates, and sashes.
Admission to the festival tent is free. King's Ball: admission fee according to club regulations.
By car: B5 west of Husum, exit Horstedt. By train: Husum main station, then approx. 10 min. by bus or taxi to Horstedt.
Admission to the festival tent is free. Food and drinks at the stands are subject to charge. King's Ball with dancing: admission fee according to club regulations.
