Medieval Flair Directly on the Weser
When the Advent season begins in Bremen, the Schlachte – the historic riverside promenade on the Weser – transforms into one of the most atmospheric winter markets in Northern Germany. The Schlachte-Zauber deliberately avoids classic Christmas kitsch, focusing instead on Hanseatic and maritime flair: around one hundred decorated wooden huts, and in between, a pirate village where craftspeople in historical attire demonstrate their skills.
Over two dozen crafts are showcased here – from blacksmiths and spice merchants to textile workers. Musicians, jugglers, and mead stalls transport you back to the time when Bremen was a powerful Hanseatic city and ships docked directly at the Schlachte. It is precisely this location by the water, with a view of the Weser, that makes the Schlachte-Zauber unique among German winter and Christmas markets.
Opening with Fireworks over the Weser
The event kicks off with a fireworks display directly over the Weser on the opening evening. Afterwards, the market is open daily until just before Christmas. The culinary offerings are equally Hanseatic: mulled wine, candied almonds, wild boar sausages, fire-roasted salmon, as well as mead and fruit wines are part of the regular repertoire.
A Bremen Classic in Advent
The Schlachte-Zauber complements the classic Bremen Christmas market on the market square and in the city center – many visitors combine both markets for an Advent stroll through the Hanseatic city. Those who love maritime Bremen will find the most beautiful setting here: the Weser at your back, historic huts against the skyline of the old town.
