About Kerwa Reichenbach

The Kirchweih Reichenbach is the annual village festival of the municipality of Reichenbach in the Upper Franconian district of Kronach. On the third weekend in September, Franconian customs are celebrated: a church parade, the traditional Frühschoppen (morning pint), and above all the Plantanz – a historic Franconian folk dance – are the focus. The Kerwa is musically accompanied by the Original Reichenbacher Blasmusik e.V., which has been preserving the tradition since 1963. For two days, the village transforms into a meeting point for the community and guests from the surrounding area. The Kirchweih is deeply rooted in Reichenbach's identity and is an authentic example of the region's vibrant Kirchweih culture.

Franconian Kerwa with Plantanz

The Kirchweih Reichenbach – in the Franconian dialect "Kerwa" – is the traditional village festival of the municipality of Reichenbach. It is celebrated on the third weekend of September and is one of the most important events in the village. The focus is on the Plantanz, a historic Franconian folk dance that characterises the Kerwa.

Program over two days

On the festival Sunday (8:30 AM to 6:00 PM), a church parade, the traditional Frühschoppen, and the Plantanz form the heart of the festival. On the festival Monday (9:30 AM to 6:00 PM), the Kirchweih continues. The Kerwa is musically accompanied by the Original Reichenbacher Blasmusik e.V., which was founded in 1963 and has been preserving the tradition for generations.

Living Customs

The Kirchweih dates back to the consecration of the local church and combines ecclesiastical tradition with village conviviality. The Plantanz with its Planpaare (dancing couples) is a special characteristic of the Franconian Kirchweihen around Kronach – a living custom carried by the village youth.

Reichenbach – Kronach District

Reichenbach is located in the Kronach district in the Bavarian administrative region of Upper Franconia, near the border with Thuringia. Here, the Kerwa is not a tourist spectacle, but genuine, living Franconian custom, supported by clubs and the village community.
