Traditional Franconian Kirchweih with Plantanz in the Kronach district
The Kirchweih Reichenbach – in the Franconian dialect "Kerwa" – is the traditional village festival of the municipality of Reichenbach. It is celebrated on the third weekend of September and is one of the most important events in the village. The focus is on the Plantanz, a historic Franconian folk dance that characterises the Kerwa.
On the festival Sunday (8:30 AM to 6:00 PM), a church parade, the traditional Frühschoppen, and the Plantanz form the heart of the festival. On the festival Monday (9:30 AM to 6:00 PM), the Kirchweih continues. The Kerwa is musically accompanied by the Original Reichenbacher Blasmusik e.V., which was founded in 1963 and has been preserving the tradition for generations.
The Kirchweih dates back to the consecration of the local church and combines ecclesiastical tradition with village conviviality. The Plantanz with its Planpaare (dancing couples) is a special characteristic of the Franconian Kirchweihen around Kronach – a living custom carried by the village youth.
Reichenbach is located in the Kronach district in the Bavarian administrative region of Upper Franconia, near the border with Thuringia. Here, the Kerwa is not a tourist spectacle, but genuine, living Franconian custom, supported by clubs and the village community.
The Kirchweih Reichenbach 2026 will be celebrated on September 20 and 21. On the festival Sunday, from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM, a church parade, the traditional Frühschoppen, and the Plantanz form the heart of the festival.
