Four-day local and district music festival celebrating the 130th anniversary of the Wilhelmsthal Music Association 1896
When the fairy lights are strung across the festival grounds on the first weekend in August, the most traditional festival of the year begins in Wilhelmsthal, a community of 2,200 inhabitants in the Upper Franconian district of Kronach: the Heimatfest of the Musikverein Wilhelmsthal 1896 e.V. For four days, the village transforms into a festival arena with a festival tent, amusement park, traditional costume groups, and a packed music program. The festival has been celebrated in this form since the 1960s and is a cornerstone of the festival calendar in the Frankenwald.
Thursday opens the festival with the traditional beer tasting from the Wilhelmsthal brewery in the presence of the mayor and the traditional costume band. Friday focuses on Family Day: a musical instrument carousel for children, discounted rides until 6 p.m., and a party night with live bands in the evening. Saturday is the highlight with the "Großer Heimatabend" (Grand Local Heritage Evening): warm-up from 4 p.m., traditional costume group performances (three age groups), folk dance displays, and a grand anniversary fireworks display from 8 p.m. Sunday begins with the festival church service in the tent at 9 a.m., followed by a morning pint, family afternoon, and an evening dance.
The 2026 edition is a double anniversary celebration: the Musikverein Wilhelmsthal 1896 e.V. celebrates its 130th anniversary, and at the same time, it hosts the Kreismusikfest (KMF) of the North Bavarian Music Association (NBMB). This brings together brass bands from the entire district association for evaluation concerts, a festive ceremony with an anniversary concert, and a grand parade on the festival Sunday. The festive ceremony for the 130th anniversary will take place in advance on April 25, 2026.
Wilhelmsthal is characterized by its close connection to Bohemian-Moravian brass music – a legacy of traditional Upper Franconian musical culture along the border with the Egerland. The Trachtenkapelle Wilhelmsthal traditionally performs in Upper Franconian costume, complemented by women's choirs, the men's choir "Cäcilia," and the modern combo "Swinging Church," which provides the musical accompaniment for the ecumenical festival church service.
With over 30 active music associations, the Kronach district is a stronghold of Upper Franconian brass music. The Heimatfest Wilhelmsthal is one of the annual highlights of this vibrant club landscape. The free admission to the festival tent – a special feature that distinguishes the festival from many commercial folk festivals – makes it a true celebration for all generations from the Rodach Valley and the Frankenwald.
From Thursday, July 30, to Sunday, August 2, 2026, the Musikverein Wilhelmsthal 1896 e.V. invites you to the Heimatfest for the fourteenth time in this format – this time as the District Music Festival of the North Bavarian Music Association and for the 130th anniversary of the association.
The festival tent at the Wilhelmsthal festival grounds can accommodate around 1,500 guests. Hundreds of lights adorn the village streets, and an amusement park with carousels and rides complements the festival program. The highlight is the Grand Local Heritage Evening on Saturday with traditional costume groups and the anniversary fireworks display around 10:15 p.m.
On Sunday, the ecumenical festival church service will be held in the morning with the traditional costume band, the women's choir, the men's choir "Cäcilia," and the band "Swinging Church." This will be followed by a morning pint with guest bands from the district association, a family program in the afternoon with the Musikverein Zeyern, and performances by young musicians. Admission to the festival tent is free on all days.
Free admission to the festival tent on all four days. Food and drinks at usual festival prices: Liter of beer approx. €9.50, half chicken approx. €11, sausage roll €4, Langos €6-8. Payment possible in cash; card payment accepted at some stalls.
By car via the A73, exit Kronach-Süd, then B85 towards Ludwigsstadt, turn off to Wilhelmsthal. Parking available at the festival grounds and in the town center. By train: Kronach station (Nuremberg–Saalfeld line), then continue by bus (line 8350) to Wilhelmsthal.
Admission to the festival tent is free on all four days. Traditional costume evenings, concerts, and the fireworks display are also accessible free of charge. Food and drinks at usual festival prices.
Guesthouses and holiday apartments in Wilhelmsthal itself, hotels in Kronach (10 km). Advance booking is highly recommended, as the Heimatfest attracts both regional and national visitors.
