About Historischer Markt Bremen

The Historischer Markt zu Bremen transforms the heart of Bremen's Old Town into a medieval market world for around six and a half weeks. Craftsmen, guild masters, musicians, and food stalls line the Schoppensteel and the front of Unser-Lieben-Frauen-Kirchhof, between the Liebfrauenkirche, the Town Hall, and the world-famous Bremen Town Musicians. With its long run from mid-October to early November, it is one of the longest medieval events of the year in Germany. The traditional market is organized by Marktwelt Bremen.

Medieval Times Between the Town Hall and the Town Musicians

When autumn arrives in Bremen's Old Town, the Middle Ages return to the Schoppensteel. The Historischer Markt zu Bremen unfolds on the front of Unser-Lieben-Frauen-Kirchhof between the Liebfrauenkirche and the Town Hall – just a few steps from the Bremen Town Musicians. The location couldn't be more Hanseatic: central, steeped in history, and easily accessible by bus and train.

Two Eras, One Market

The market spans two areas, each with its own historical atmosphere: while the Schoppensteel offers a traditional medieval experience, the production and costumes on Unser-Lieben-Frauen-Kirchhof bridge the gap from the 17th to the 19th century. Thus, different centuries of Hanseatic market tradition are connected within a few meters.

Guild Masters, Music, and Food Stalls

The program thrives on craftsmanship: guild masters demonstrate their skills, from leatherworkers crafting everything from shoelaces to purses, to artisans with a wide range of goods. Market music plays, and the aroma of fresh potato pancakes, bratwurst, grilled salmon, and fresh pretzels wafts from the food stalls. In the tavern at Schoppensteel, mead and hot mulled wine warm thirsty market visitors.

A Hanseatic Market Tradition Since the 1980s

The Historischer Markt zu Bremen was created in 1985 to celebrate the 950th anniversary of the Bremer Freimarkt and has since become a firm tradition in the Hanseatic city – in 2025, it was held for the 35th time. Its extraordinary duration of around six and a half weeks makes it a permanent fixture of the Bremen autumn: locals and tourists alike have weeks to immerse themselves in the historical atmosphere and combine it with a stroll through the Hanseatic city.
