About Behringersdorfer Kirchweih

The Behringersdorf Kirchweih is one of the most traditional Kärwa (church consecration festival) celebrations in the Middle Franconian district of Nürnberger Land. For four days, the Sophienpark in the Behringersdorf district of Schwaig transforms into a lively festival ground with a beer tent, Kirwabaum (maypole), stalls, live music, and a beach volleyball tournament. The organizer is the Kirchweihverein Behringersdorf, which combines the old tradition with creative themes and new formats. The 2026 edition runs from June 19th to 22nd.

A Franconian Kärwa with a Modern Twist

The Behringersdorf Kirchweih – Franconian "Kärwa" – takes place annually on the third weekend of June in the Sophienpark. The festival grounds are located in the Behringersdorf district of the municipality of Schwaig near Nuremberg, east of the Middle Franconian metropolis, in the Nürnberger Land district. Since moving to this new location, the festival has gained significant profile.

Tradition Meets Creativity

The Kärwa upholds classic Franconian tradition: erecting the Kirwabaum, beer tapping by the mayor, a festival parade, dancing under the tree, and Franconian specialties in the beer tent. At the same time, the Kirchweihverein Behringersdorf consistently opts for extraordinary themes that generate regional attention – legendary are the "Kir Wars" theme (Star Wars parody) or the "Viva Las Vegas"-style Sunday with an Elvis impersonator and showgirls.

Beach Volleyball on 140 Tons of Sand

A special feature in recent years: a beach volleyball tournament is held before the actual Kärwa begins. 140 tons of sand are brought in for three courts, and ten teams compete for the "Zapf-Pokal" (tapping trophy). The tournament has become a firm kickoff to the festival days and fills the Sophienpark even before the official opening on Monday (the daily schedule varies in some years).

Program Structure

  • Friday: Festival kickoff with live music, beer tapping, beer tent operation
  • Saturday: Beach volleyball tournament, festival evening with band, dancing under the Kirwabaum
  • Sunday: Festival service, morning pint with themed performance, family afternoon, evening event
  • Monday: Children's program, festival finale with musical program and "resurrection" of the Kirwabaum

Location in the Nürnberger Land

Behringersdorf is located directly on the eastern city limits of Nuremberg, reachable by S-Bahn line S1 from Nuremberg Central Station in approx. 10 minutes. Schwaig near Nuremberg belongs to the Nürnberger Land district in Middle Franconia (Bavaria) and, along with Behringersdorf, Schwaig, and Malmsbach, is part of a close-knit network of clubs and customs. The Kärwa is a central element of local culture in this region and, at the same time, a melting pot for younger generations from the northern Nuremberg metropolitan area.

Behringersdorfer Kirchweih — edition 2026

The Behringersdorf Kirchweih 2026 will again take place from Friday, June 19th to Monday, June 22nd, 2026, in the Sophienpark. The weekend combines the traditional elements of a Franconian Kärwa (Kirwabaum erection, festival parade, dancing under the tree) with the now-established beach volleyball tournament and a themed Sunday morning pint. The organizer is the Kirchweihverein Behringersdorf.

Behringersdorf Kirchweih 2026

The 2026 Kärwa returns once more to the Sophienpark, which has established itself as an ideal location since the move. The program spans around four days, from the sporting kickoff with the beach volleyball tournament to the traditional festival finale on Monday.

What to Expect in 2026

The exact daily program and the Sunday theme will be announced by the Kirchweihverein closer to the date – in previous years, concepts like "Kir Wars" (Star Wars parody) and "Viva Las Vegas" (with an Elvis impersonator and showgirls) have been featured. What is certain: 140 tons of sand will again be brought in for three beach volleyball courts in the park.
