The largest Rose Monday parade in Central Germany in the Bach town of Köthen
While the carnival strongholds of Cologne, Mainz, and Düsseldorf are in full swing on Rose Monday, the small Bach town of Köthen in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district has long celebrated its own triumph: The Rose Monday parade, organised by the 1st Köthen Carnival Society KUKAKÖ 1954 e.V., is considered the largest carnival procession in Central Germany. Over 100 floats, walking groups, music, and dance groups snake through the city centre, followed by thousands of onlookers who travel from half of Saxony-Anhalt in costume.
Unlike its Rhineland counterparts, the KUKAKÖ parade is firmly rooted in East German carnival tradition – a tradition that experienced a remarkable renaissance after reunification. Today, the event is one of the most prestigious political stages in the state of Saxony-Anhalt: The Minister-President and numerous state parliament members travel specifically each year, hand out candy bags, and are accompanied by the MDR broadcast van. If you like politicians in penguin costumes, this is the place to be.
Precisely at 11:00 AM, the procession sets off – strictly according to carnival rules, because at "Eleven past Eleven" the festive heart beats strongest. The route leads through the historic city centre with its bourgeois facades, past Köthen Castle, where Johann Sebastian Bach was once court Kapellmeister. From 1:00 PM, the grand open-air programme starts on the market square with stage shows, dance groups, satirical speeches (Büttenreden), and live music. Bratwurst, mulled wine, and Berliner doughnuts keep the cold at bay.
The KUKAKÖ parade is more than a festival: it's a meeting point for the entire region. Clubs from Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Dessau-Roßlau, Zerbst, and even from the neighbouring Burgenland district participate with their own floats. Admission to the entire programme is free – a commitment to popular culture, which in Saxony-Anhalt has found its own cheerful identity between Bach's heritage and its industrial past.
The 36th edition of the KUKAKÖ Rose Monday parade, under the motto "The universe longs for carnival – KUKAKÖ is everywhere!", is expected in 2026. Over 100 floats, walking, music, and dance groups are anticipated, parading through the city centre in galactic costumes. As in previous years, MDR will broadcast the spectacle live, and the Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, along with state parliament members, will traditionally join the revellers.
Motto 2026: "The universe longs for carnival – KUKAKÖ is everywhere!" – expect aliens, spaceships, and stars to dominate the scene.
Köthen (Anhalt) is located between Magdeburg and Halle (Saale) and is accessible via the A9 motorway (Köthen exit) and regular regional trains (RE/RB). Köthen main station is about 1 km from the market square. Due to the parade, city centre streets will be closed on Rose Monday – use the signposted parking lots on the outskirts of the city centre or it's best to travel by train.
Admission to the parade and the subsequent open-air event on the market square is free.
Arrive early (from 10 AM) and secure a spot along the route – the market square will be the most crowded. Dress up if you like: Carnival in Köthen is truly lived, not just observed.
