A Journey into the Middle Ages within Vellberg's City Walls
Vellberg, a small town between Schwäbisch Hall and Crailsheim in the Schwäbisch Hall district, is considered one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in the region. Since its first documented mention in 1102, the mighty city wall, Vellberg Castle, the winding alleys, and the half-timbered houses have shaped the town's appearance. On April 18th and 19th, 2026, the Medieval Spring Market will take place here for the 8th time.
The program reads like a medieval picture book: a spectacular fire show, impressive falconry demonstrations with birds of prey up close, rousing live music from minnesingers, jugglers in the alleys, guards in historical armor, and countless stalls around the city wall. The atmosphere thrives because the setting doesn't need to be recreated – Vellberg already provides it.
Over 50 medieval merchants will offer their wares: handcrafted weapons, jewelry, leather goods, clay pots, homemade liqueurs, and honey directly from the beekeeper. Craftsmen will demonstrate their skills live – blacksmiths, woodturners, potters, and basket weavers will showcase their work according to historical models. The food is prepared according to medieval recipes – suckling pig, millet casserole, spiced mead, and sweet doughnuts.
The association Kulturschock e.V. organizes medieval markets throughout Europe and is considered one of the most experienced organizers in the scene. In Vellberg, the 8th edition of the Spring Market is presented – an established date in the event calendar of the medieval scene in Southern Germany.
The town, with around 4,200 inhabitants in the Hohenlohe region, is a member of the "Hohenlohe Romantic Road" and is known for its exceptionally well-preserved historical townscape. Vellberg Castle on the plateau and the town church of St. Martin are among the sights you can visit on the sidelines of your market visit.
From April 18th to 19th, 2026, Vellberg's old town will open its gates for the 8th time for the Medieval Spring Market. One of Southern Germany's best-preserved city walls forms the backdrop for a weekend full of historical reenactment – fire show, falconry, jugglers, live music, market stalls, and craft demonstrations.
