Tips
Come for the opening on April 30th at 7 p.m. – the Maypole setting with MV Lyra is the most atmospheric moment. Those who prefer to come later will experience the witches' fire and disco from 8 p.m. onwards. Families with children will benefit from May 1st with the magician's show.
Fire Brigade Festival with a Long Tradition
The Thalexweiler fire district belongs to the volunteer fire brigade of the city of Lebach with its ten fire districts. The fire brigade in Thalexweiler is deeply rooted in village life: every year around May 1st, it organizes one of the largest club festivals in the district – traditionally as a "celebration into May" on the eve and as a family festival on May Day itself.
What Makes the Event Special
While other May festivals focus on a single program item, the Thalexweiler fire district combines several elements here: the official Maypole setting with keg tapping, the musical opening by the Music Association "Lyra" Thalexweiler, a witches' fire in the evening, a dance performance by TV Thalexweiler, and the subsequent disco with DJ Fayne. On May 1st, the classic morning pint (Frühschoppen) format takes over with lunch and a children's program.
Thalexweiler – A District with History
Thalexweiler is located in the Theeltal valley in the middle of Saarland, in the Saarlouis district. With around 1,800 inhabitants, it is one of Lebach's larger districts. The village center was first mentioned in documents in 1235; the parish church dates back to the 9th century. Until the end of 1973, Thalexweiler was an independent municipality – the 1974 municipal reform led to its incorporation into the city of Lebach. The strong club life, which can be felt in every edition of the May festival, is a legacy of this independence.
Who Takes the Stage at the Festival
The MV Lyra Thalexweiler, one of the oldest music associations in the Theeltal, traditionally performs the musical opening on April 30th. The TV Thalexweiler – the local gymnastics club – contributes a dance show. From the late evening hours, DJ Fayne takes over with a disco set and cocktail/wine bar; on May 1st, children's magician Andreas will be a guest.
Saarland's May Festival DNA
The fire brigade festival is exemplary of the Saarland's May festival tradition: grilled pork skewers (Schwenker) and roast pork (Spießbraten) on an open charcoal grill, fries and schnitzel from the club kitchen, morning pint (Frühschoppen) with brass band music, and the clear mission that the proceeds flow directly into equipment, youth fire brigade, and club life. For those who want to experience the authentic Saarland away from the big city festivals – this is the ideal date.
