About Children's and Youth Costume Parade

According to its organizers, the Mainz Children's and Youth Costume Parade is the largest of its kind in Europe. On February 14, 2026, the parade will start at 2:11 PM in Boppstraße and proceed via Kaiserstraße to Schillerplatz and finally to Domplatz. Thousands of children and young people from Mainz schools, kindergartens, carnival clubs, sports clubs, and citizens' initiatives will march in costume with music bands, walking groups, and small floats through the city center. The motto for 2026 is: "Fruchtzwerge" (Fruit Dwarfs). The event is a central date in the Mainz Carnival campaign and makes Carnival accessible to children.

Europe's Largest Children's Costume Parade

With thousands of participants, the Mainz Children's and Youth Costume Parade is considered the largest of its kind in Europe. In no other German carnival stronghold is the participation of children so comprehensive and independently organized. Schools, kindergartens, carnival clubs, sports clubs, associations, and initiatives form the walking groups, design small floats, and bring their own music.

Route through the Old Town

The parade starts at 2:11 PM in Boppstraße and leads via Kaiserstraße – one of the main arteries of Mainz Old Town – across Schillerplatz to Domplatz. This route is approximately half the length of the Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday Parade) and traverses the historic city center. Thousands of spectators – parents, grandparents, relatives, teachers, and curious visitors – gather along the route.

Motto 2026: "Fruchtzwerge"

The motto "Fruchtzwerge" (Fruit Dwarfs) is – as is traditional in Mainz Carnival – intended to be ambiguous. It refers both to the well-known branded product for children and to the young carnival participants themselves. Many groups will develop costumes and small floats that playfully incorporate this motto.

Carnival by and for Children

In contrast to the Rosenmontagszug, which is primarily a spectacle parade with prominent clubs and floats, the Children's and Youth Costume Parade is characterized by a special energy: It is Carnival by and for children. The costumes are often homemade, and the performances showcase the young generation's enthusiasm for the Mainz tradition. Thus, the parade is also an important tool for passing on Carnival culture to the next generation.
