Who are the "Schiebocker"?

Bischofswerda in the Bautzen district is popularly known as Schiebock – a nickname that dates back to a story from the 17th century. According to legend, after a fire, the town's citizens saved their belongings on wheelbarrows (Schiebock = wheelbarrow). This nickname says it all: The Schiebocker Tage is the big city festival that involves the entire town center every year in June.

A Diverse Stage Program

For three days, the historic center transforms into a festival mile with several stages. Live music, dance, regional clubs, cover bands, and national artists perform. In 2026, Olaf Henning is confirmed, among others – one of the most famous German pop stars. In addition, folk-rock bands like a German-Irish formation, the Acoustic Rock Trio with Katja Neumann, Cherry Burn, Cat Lion (Country), and the "WE LOVE TEKKNO" event ensure musical diversity.

Schiebock Race and Culinary Delights

The sporting highlight is the traditional Schiebock race – a humorous competition where teams push wheelbarrows across the cobblestones of the old town. In addition, amusement rides, an extensive market and gastronomy mile, and public viewings characterize the event. A Talent Show offers a stage for local young artists (apply at [email protected]).

Bischofswerda is located between Dresden and Görlitz on the edge of Upper Lusatia. The town is a good starting point for hikes into the Lusatian Highlands, Saxon Switzerland, or to experience Sorbian culture in Bautzen.
