650 Years of the Granite Village

Demitz-Thumitz in the Bautzen district is colloquially known as the "Granite Village" – a nickname that goes back to the centuries-old processing of granite in the Upper Lusatia region. Paving stones, curbs, and gravestones made of Demitz granite adorn streets and cemeteries throughout Germany and Europe. In 2026, the municipality celebrates 650 years since its first mention – an occasion for a three-day festival weekend from September 13th to 15th, 2026.

Festival Weekend with Music and History

The program combines classic village festival elements with historical reflection:

• Friday, September 13th — Festival opening with the party band Jolly Jumper and DJ Leo
• Saturday, September 14th — Village exploration with various stations (Granite Stone Museum, old workshops, church), craft market at changing locations
• Sunday, September 15th — Festival finale with grand fireworks at the Sports and Leisure Centre

Granite and Sorbian Heritage

Demitz-Thumitz is located in the bilingual Upper Lusatia region, near the Sorbian settlement areas. The city of Bautzen is only a few kilometers away; the municipality's Granite Stone Trail showcases the industrial historical significance of the stone quarried and processed here. Visitors to the anniversary festival will experience not only a Volksfest (public festival) atmosphere but also a piece of industrial culture and Saxon-Sorbian heritage in the state of Saxony.
