Two weeks of cheese tradition in the West Allgäu
The Scheidegg Cheese Weeks are a traditional winter culinary event in one of the most beautiful high-altitude health resorts in the West Allgäu. At an altitude between 600 and 1,000 meters, on the transition between the Alps and Lake Constance, Scheidegg is located in an area that has been shaped by alpine farming for centuries. Cheesemaking is a core part of the rural economy here.
The special feature of the Cheese Weeks is the direct encounter with cheesemaker families. Guided hikes lead to alpine dairies and farms where visitors can watch the cheesemaker at work. The accompanying documentary film »Im Berg dahuim« shows the life of the cheesemakers over several seasons on February 4th.
Highlights of the Cheese Weeks are the torchlight hikes followed by cheese fondue on two Saturday evenings (February 7th and 14th). This combination of a winter hike and a communal cheese feast in a mountain inn is one of the most impressive program points and is usually booked up early.
Twice during the Cheese Weeks (February 6th and 13th), a cooking class offers the opportunity to learn how to traditionally prepare the alpine specialty Kässpätzle. The course combines practical instruction with the culinary tradition of the region and is also suitable for beginners.
The Cheese Weeks overlap with the local carnival season: On February 8th, the carnival parade winds through the town center, and on February 12th, the traditional storming of the town hall takes place. Those who prefer to be out and about away from the world of cheese can take a day trip via Bregenz to the Pfänder mountain (February 3rd and 10th) — although the panoramic mountain above Lake Constance is geographically part of Vorarlberg, it is easily accessible from Scheidegg.
Scheidegg is one of Bavaria's climatic health resorts. Clean air, gentle low mountain ranges, and family-friendliness (treetop path, Skywalk bridge, Scheidegg waterfalls) make the municipality in the Lindau district (Bavarian Swabia, AGS 09776) a popular destination for those seeking relaxation, even in winter.
The 2026 Cheese Weeks span two weeks and combine several program strands: Guided hikes to alpine dairies and cheesemaker families, cheese tastings in the mountain inns and at the farms, cooking classes for the traditional preparation of Kässpätzle, torchlight hikes with cheese fondue, a horse-drawn carriage ride with a restaurant visit to conclude the festival, and a documentary film about the cheesemaker's life.
The local carnival is integrated into the Cheese Weeks — the carnival parade on February 8th and the storming of the town hall on February 12th combine cheese tradition and festive customs. Those seeking a change from the world of cheese can participate in two day trips to the Pfänder mountain above Bregenz.
