Steam museum railway through the Wutachtal valley — 25 km, 4 viaducts, 6 tunnels between the Black Forest and Baar
The Sauschwänzlebahn — officially the Wutachtalbahn — is one of Germany's best-known museum railways and a landmark of the town of Blumberg in the Schwarzwald-Baar district. Over a route length of 25 kilometers, the railway runs from Blumberg-Zollhaus through the Wutachtal valley to Weizen, overcoming an altitude difference of around 230 meters. This is made possible by an engineering masterpiece of the 19th century: four viaducts, six tunnels, and the famous Great Stockhalde loop tunnel — the "Sauschwanz" (pig's tail) of the route, from which the railway gets its name.
The 2026 season starts on Saturday, April 25th, with the traditional opening festival at Blumberg-Zollhaus station. Regular trains run until October 25th — on weekends and public holidays throughout the season, and from June to the end of September also on Thursdays and Fridays. Not every journey is a steam locomotive trip: the Sauschwänzlebahn runs with various locomotives, either diesel or steam depending on the day — this is indicated in the timetable.
In addition to the regular seasonal trips, there are numerous special trips in 2026: Mother's Day trip in May, Family Theatre & Trip on June 6th (already sold out), Prosecco trip on June 27th, Schwarzwaldhof Engineer's Trips on June 28th and July 11th, guided railway hikes on June 7th, July 4th, August 2nd, and September 5th, as well as the Day of the Railway in September. In Advent, the popular St. Nicholas trains run on the first three Advent weekends.
Blumberg is located in the south of Baden-Württemberg in the Schwarzwald-Baar district, on the border between the southern Black Forest and the Baar high plateau. The route of the Sauschwänzlebahn leads through one of Germany's most beautiful nature reserves — the Wutachtal valley with its steep rock faces, dense forests, and deep gorges. Zollhaus station is located directly on the former German-Swiss border and was strategically important in the 19th century — the route was originally built as a military bypass to avoid passing through Switzerland.
The Sauschwänzlebahn — officially the Wutachtalbahn — kicks off its 2026 season on Saturday, April 25th, with an opening festival at Blumberg-Zollhaus station: speeches, music, champagne, and beer. Until Sunday, October 25th, trains will run on the 25-kilometer museum route to Weizen, with stops in Epfenhofen and Lausheim-Blumegg.
The railway operates throughout the season on weekends and public holidays. From June to the end of September, there are also Thursday and Friday trips. The route passes through four viaducts and six tunnels, including the famous Great Stockhalde loop tunnel — the "Sauschwanz" that gives the railway its name. There is no guarantee of steam or diesel operation; the locomotive changes are indicated in the timetable.
