Pre-Advent Atmosphere in the Western Münsterland

The western Münsterland region between Borken, Stadtlohn, and Vreden has a distinct pre-Advent tradition. The Südlohn Christmas market — affectionately called "Adventstreff" locally — is part of this tradition: a one-day market on the Friday before the first Advent around the historic St. Vitus Church. In 2026, it opens on Friday, November 28, 2026, from 3:00 PM.

Program and Schedule

• 3:00 PM — Market opens around St. Vitus Church.
• 5:00 PM — St. Nicholas visit with gifts for children.
• All evening: Mulled wine, bratwurst, lard bread, hot chocolate, pastries.
• Stage program: Church choirs, brass bands, school choirs.
• Association stalls: Rifle clubs, carnival associations, sports clubs, parish — all proceeds benefit local causes.

Adventstreff Oeding — the Sister Event

A week later, on Sunday, 2nd Advent (November 29, 2026), the municipality's second Advent gathering will take place in Oeding at the Platz an der Burg — a similarly designed format with its own distinct character. Those planning a day trip to the western Münsterland can combine both markets in one tour.

Südlohn — the Castle Town

Südlohn is a municipality in the Borken district in North Rhine-Westphalia, in the western Münsterland region near the Dutch border. The municipality consists of the two main towns of Südlohn and Oeding. St. Vitus Church is the historical center of Südlohn — a Gothic church building with centuries of history. Oeding Castle is also a significant architectural monument in the municipality.

By car via the B70 or L572 towards Stadtlohn/Vreden. Parking available in the market square and at the school. By public transport: Bus line 75 or R75 from Borken or Stadtlohn.
