Karneval in the Westmünsterland
While Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Aachen dominate the headlines of Rhenish Karneval, the rural Westmünsterland cherishes its own, heartfelt Karneval tradition. Stadtlohn, in the Borken district, is one of the region's most festive strongholds — for five days, Karneval societies, dance troupes, and citizens celebrate the fifth season together. The session's spirit takes over the entire town between Vredener Straße and Berkelpromenade.
Program 2026 — Five Days of Stadtlohn Karneval
From Altweiber Thursday to Veilchendienstag, Stadtlohn offers a packed program of parades, coronations, and festivals. Highlights include the traditional storming of the town hall, the colorful children's parade, and the grand Rosenmontag parade that rolls through the town center.
Tradition and Customs
The Stadtlohn Karneval societies maintain a vibrant club life. From the children's royal couple to the town's royal couple, from float construction to the dance troupe — Karneval here is the collective effort of entire families. The Karneval mass in St. Otger Church on Sunday morning adds a spiritual dimension to the celebration before the festive revelry erupts on the streets again.
Westmünsterland Peculiarities
Unlike Rhenish Karneval, Stadtlohn mixes the Low German dialect with session rituals. The throwing specialties range from classic candies and Berliners to regional delicacies. Glass bottles are banned in the town center — the town opts for a shard-free Karneval celebration with a family atmosphere.
Stadtlohn and the Borken District
Stadtlohn is located in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, near the Dutch border. With around 21,000 inhabitants, the town in the Borken district is an important Karneval engine in the rural Westmünsterland. Its location makes Stadtlohn a magnet for Dutch revelers from neighboring Aalten and Winterswijk — Karneval here is a cross-border folk festival.
