The world's largest computer and video games trade fair at Koelnmesse — five days of games, hardware, esports, and industry networking
gamescom has been based in Cologne since 2009 and is internationally recognized as the world's largest trade fair for computer and video games. In terms of both number of exhibitors and visitor numbers, gamescom has surpassed all other gaming trade fairs worldwide — the E3 in Los Angeles ceased operations in 2023, and the Japanese and Chinese fairs are smaller on a regional scale. Cologne thus serves as the global meeting point for the games industry.
gamescom 2026 runs from Wednesday, August 26 to Sunday, August 30. Wednesday is Trade Visitor Day — accessible exclusively to trade visitors and media, featuring major industry press conferences (gamescom: Opening Night Live) and industry networking. From Thursday to Sunday, the exhibition halls are open to the public — hundreds of thousands of gaming fans from across Europe flock to Cologne.
gamescom fills almost all the halls of Koelnmesse — from the Entertainment Area with major publishers (Sony PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Activision, EA) to the Indie Arena Booth for independent studios, and dedicated areas for Hardware, Merchandise, Retro Gaming, Cosplay, and the Heart of Gaming. The devcom developer conference takes place before and during gamescom as a parallel industry conference.
In addition to hands-on gaming opportunities, there are numerous esports tournaments, cosplay contests (gamescom Cosplay Village), meet-and-greets with YouTubers and streamers, and the annual gamescom Awards. The gamescom city festival brings additional fun to Cologne's city center around Rudolfplatz, Hohenzollernring, and Friesenplatz — as an open-air city festival with its own stage (see separate entry in the festival calendar).
The independent city of Cologne, with the Koelnmesse venue, numerous game studios (including Crytek), universities offering game development programs, and a vibrant esports scene, is Germany's most important hub for the gaming industry. The gamescom week brings hundreds of thousands of international visitors to the city each year — hotels, gastronomy, and public transport operate at full capacity.
